A man took a woman hostage at a 7-Eleven convenience store in west Denver on Monday morning, then was shot by police after an hour of negotiations.

The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was in critical condition. The hostage was not injured, police said.

The incident unfolded as a barricade situation just before 9 a.m. at the store at West Colfax Avenue and Perry Street.

Officers rushed to the scene along with an ambulance and an armored vehicle. Hostage negotiators were called in, and SWAT members — in full gear including long rifles — surrounded the store.

At least three people were in the store with the suspect, police said.

Police negotiated with the man for about an hour, when he came outside the store holding a woman.

"The individual decided to come out holding a female hostage, at which time the officers told him to let the hostage go. He refused," Denver Police Chief Robert White told reporters at the scene. "He then attempted to drag the female back in the store. Out of fear for the female's safety, one of the officers fired one shot, striking the individual."

No hostages or officers were injured, White said.

An ambulance with a police escort took the suspect to a local hospital, police said.

His name or a motive for the incident were not released as of Monday evening.

During the standoff, West Colfax Avenue was closed from Newton to Perry streets.

White said he was pleased the situation was resolved quickly.

"We heard a loud bang and saw the guy's face just go back, like if there was a car accident. Whiplash," witness Anthony Flores told 7News. "After that, he didn't move at all."

Seems about right. You get about an hour to mull it over if you are serious about taking someone hostage (i.e. realize wtf you are doing). After that, you should be shot for legitimately threatened someone's life.

I didn't see a gun in the video either but his right hand is down and he must have a weapon in it holding the lady hostage cause otherwise none of this makes sense.... why would there be a standoff with an unarmed man? If he was unarmed they coulda just sent a 2 man car and the film crew from COPS lol

Yeah I'd have to assume he was in possession of a deadly weapon. I would certainly hope so.

Same here, or that's not just fucked up but a serious waste of police resources

Dude could have even had a knife or screwdriver and he still deserved to get blown away. Even without a handheld weapon, he could have claimed to have an explosive vest or something.

If you take hostages and threaten innocent people, you deserve to get shot to be stopped. Visual confirmation of a weapon or not.

There are a lot of people who "deserve" to get shot. People who cheat and leave their families, people who get behind a wheel trashed, the list goes on. That doesn't mean that shooting them is necessarily the right way to deal with them.

Idk, I feel we shouldnt tolerate anything like hostages. Even if he didn't brandish a weapon, you never know what the hell he had in his jacket. 9/10 times, if you take someone hostage you have some sort of weapon.

Well I disagree with you here. I'm not talking knee-jerk crap like you listed. "Oh that guy's a dick for not loving his kids he should be shot." That's Sensationalist nonsense. We're talking about a person who took innocent bystanders against their will and was holding them hostage. At that point the police did make an effort to talk to the guy yet he still hadn't released his hostages. I think the police were totally in the right to shoot the guy if they had a clear shot, which they did. You can't play the what if, woulda coulda bullshit when innocent lives are in the balance and you have a chance to end it.

Usually I'm pretty critical of police and support those who video them to make sure they're not abusng the law like so many do. But if that's my wife, mother or child I want the police to do what they have to do to protect the innocent. If the the perp happens to live through it, that's fine but is secondary to the lives of the victims.
