A man took a woman hostage at a 7-Eleven convenience store in west Denver on Monday morning, then was shot by police after an hour of negotiations.
The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was in critical condition. The hostage was not injured, police said.
The incident unfolded as a barricade situation just before 9 a.m. at the store at West Colfax Avenue and Perry Street.
Officers rushed to the scene along with an ambulance and an armored vehicle. Hostage negotiators were called in, and SWAT members — in full gear including long rifles — surrounded the store.
At least three people were in the store with the suspect, police said.
Police negotiated with the man for about an hour, when he came outside the store holding a woman.
"The individual decided to come out holding a female hostage, at which time the officers told him to let the hostage go. He refused," Denver Police Chief Robert White told reporters at the scene. "He then attempted to drag the female back in the store. Out of fear for the female's safety, one of the officers fired one shot, striking the individual."
No hostages or officers were injured, White said.
An ambulance with a police escort took the suspect to a local hospital, police said.
His name or a motive for the incident were not released as of Monday evening.
During the standoff, West Colfax Avenue was closed from Newton to Perry streets.
White said he was pleased the situation was resolved quickly.
"We heard a loud bang and saw the guy's face just go back, like if there was a car accident. Whiplash," witness Anthony Flores told 7News. "After that, he didn't move at all."
