Who wins the job? Our RB2 might get a lot of burn, after seeing the backs in Detroits offense last year. Who becomes our second RB behind Swift? Do we sign someone else? Does Ian Wheeler light the world on fire? What do you think?

Really comes down to who can pass block better. Johnson’s offense requires a lot of backfield blocking and how good they are in the passing game. I don’t think Johnson has his preferred RB on the roster yet; it’ll probably be a backfield with 2 new faces next year to go along with Monangai

I don't know who'll be RB2. But I like hearing BJ says they'll have to earn it.

If RB2 means compliment to Swift (and maybe it won't mean that), then I tend to think it'd be a more up-the-middle powerback. I don't know if Monangai can do that or not.

Like bamainatlanta said, BJ is requiring pass protection for the RBs. Not sure who's lacking there.

I'm looking forward to see if Wheeler has even improved on his technique, cause he was looking like both a fast and strong runner. He's my pick for unexpected winner.

I don’t really see how anyone can determine that yet. The run game is one of the things that really needs pads on before you can evaluate.

I have no idea but Roshon is pretty good in pass protection and Monangai was good at pass protection in college, so that'll need to translate to the NFL for him to have that chance. Roschon could also look better running up the middle with this new IOL we've built so i'm not counting him out even though i haven't been sold on him up to this point and Roschon is also pretty good in the receiving game which we didn't see much of from Monangai in college but have heard he's not bad at it.

Didn’t Wheeler play well in the preseason last year before getting hurt? I don’t know if he should be ignored as an option to make the roster.

I think BJ wants an all purpose back as his 2. He likes to set up offensive plays where the defense has no idea what you’re going to do. He wants to be able to run out of every formation, throw a short pass, or uncork a deep ball. In order to have that versatility, you need receivers and TEs that can block, and TEs and RBs that are a threat to catch the ball. You need an OLine that can pass and run block.

One thing they were saying about Detroit last year was Montgomery and Gibbs can both do everything you’d ask a RB to do well.

It's hard to believe anyone could beat Roschon's 2.7 ypc. 😆

I think Ro wins it. I think Monangai would have to be a clearly better player to get that role right away… and I don’t think that’ll happen. Ro has always been a very high character player and I think he has a lot of respect from his teammates and that’ll hold value. Ro is also closer to Monty in mass to fill that thunder role.

Monagai would have to take the job as the season goes on. Best case would be that he eats away carries all season and takes the majority by end of season.

For the record, I’m not a Ro guy. I expect he’s fully phased out by next year.

I agree with this. I think the Bears will snag a RB early in next year's draft. Of course, I thought they'd do that this year and they did not.
The board just didn’t fall the way they wanted it to. They did try to trade up but were rebuffed.

Speculation. We dont know who they were trying to trade up for.

The main guy trying to say the bears tried to trade up is weirdorer, who tried to get poles fired. He clearly has no sources inside halas.

Were they trying to trade up for jeanty? Who knows, since ben johnson was showing all the front office/coaching staff highlights of loveland right before draft day.

Were they trying to trade up for henderson? Or was it for burden? Even if it was for henderson they clearly did not value him that much since they only offered a 7th.

They passed on multiple RB's from henderson to the 7th, I believe it was 17. It would have cost almost nothing to trade up to take the RB they really wanted, if it was a priority.

I really do think that RB was never as much of a need as the chicago media made it seem. He has only spoken highly of swift, and he doesnt speak highly of all players. For example, he's never spoken a real positive note about cole kmets football abilities, but he does all the time about swift. He instantly drafted cole's replacement but swift has no competition.

Monangai for the fire and ice combo with Swift but I like Wheeler to make the team. Small sample size but I think he offers more as a Swift replacement than Roschon would if Swift goes down.

The OP question was who will be the #2 RB. Unless you think Wheeler has a chance for that?

Probably not for RB2. He had the faster 40 time, but still on the small side and did not have the greatest agility scores.

Again though, until the pads come on, it's early to assess the run game.
