When I saw the thread, I thought he couldn't have been that old.

Bummer. He was the Gen X version of George Martin, virtually everything he touched in the 90s went big.

RIP

All things considered 61 is pretty young. I guess he self-professed he ate like a viking. Wonder if that was a contributing factor to his heart attack.

I think I have told this story before, but I got see hm and Big Black play at the Hideout block party in 2006 right after the Bears shut out the Packers to open that season. We also used to get our groceries at the Dominicks cum Mariano's off Belmont and Western, and I didn't know until later that his recording spot was right over there.

RIP

Aye it's right on Belmont. I wonder what will happen to it now. My band looked into recording there years ago. While a bit too rich for us, his prices weren't really that unaffordable, we were just super broke.

That Dominicks and later Marianos had good produce, I know some of his bros from Electrical Audio have branched out into other lucrative ventures, but suck you all didn't get to record there. Was it true he had an entire floor beneath the playing space for reverb/acoustics?

Where was the grocer exactly? Having a hard time placing it. Was that a little further north on Western? Like on Western between Belmont and Addison? I kinda remember a jewel? Not saying you're wrong, just how my mind is remembering things. Metropolitan was over there, Hungry Brain, Beat Kitchen, Belmont Barber shop (where I got my long hair chopped off and where I went until I went completely bald).

Yeah he had other staff that were a little cheaper and I'm sure they went on to do some cool shit. I wonder if they'll continue on Electrical after him, though I'm not sure whose call that is. Not sure if he had a will or what, or where that's leaves the studio.

I've never heard that story actually!

I just don't know the difference between what would be considered a well produced album, and a poorly produced album.

That said, there isn't a bad song on In Utero.

Depends on your ear. Depends on what style of music you like. I prefer a more organic approach. A mistake here or there to me lends more to the intimacy and originality of the recording.

Gimme miced drums over triggers any day.

It was between Belmont and Addison yes, next to lane tech. I thought it was a Dominick’s before it became a Mariano’s but it has been like over a decade.

I think I went to your birthday at metropolitan ya turd! I wasn’t a fan of their beer

Yeah, I kinda remember that. I'm sure you're correct.

Oh man. I got so drunk so quick that night. Yeah, all they did was lagers.
