Why no love for Robert Horry? Why does his name remain out of Hall of Fame discussion when he is eligible?

The last time I checked this guy has seven (count 'em) SEVEN rings.

That's more than Michael Jordan. That's more than Magic Johnson. More than Kareem, Bob Cousy and Larry Bird.

Everyone knows Horry didn't have as much talent as those guys but did I mention he has 7 rings!?

He played a crucial role on each and every one of those teams. He came up huge so many times we've lost count of how many games his clutch jumpers have won. Even as a rookie he was doing that in Houston, then of course later on in La Lakers and San Antonio.

So the question remains...

Does Robert Horry deserve to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame?

Don't forget, it's a pro AND a college Hall of Fame.

He may not have the glittering statistics of Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone or John Stockton but he has something they never got - a ring. TImes seven.

He has more rings than Michael Jordan. Let me say that again. Robert Horry has more rings than Michael Jordan. That sentence alone should send him to Springfield if I had a vote. If Jordan is below you on the rings pecking order you've got to go in.

If I had a vote I would vote yes for Robert Horry to make it to the Hall of Fame.

Thers a difference in Horry having 7 rings as a good role player and MJ having 6 rings as the best player ever leading his team..

Dennis Rodman has 5 championships and was a two time defensive player of the year and was probably the greatest rebounder in league history, and he won't get into the hall of fame. If you're not letting Rodman in, you can't really let guys like Robert Horry in.

I am guessing Ron Harper, John Salley and Steve Kerr will be going in as well.

Great point.

There is no hall of fame for role players. It just doesn't exist.

Not letting Rodman in the HOF is a travesty.
It will be because of who he was, not because of what he did on the basketball court, which is crap. He has 5 rings, was a major part of the best team in history, greatest rebounder, DPOY twice - there are players in the HOF who accomplished far less than he did.

Horry, on the other hand, was just a role player. A damn clutch one, but still a role player.

In fact, THINK about it (and I emphasized "think" for a reason): who did accomplish more, Reggie Miller or Rodman ?
If you take out the clutch shooting of Reggie (not a reason to make the HOF, just like Horry's clutchness isn't), he was a good (but not elite) scorer, had really low ast and reb numbers, not a great defender and his team accomplished nothing. He got to play in the finals once and that's about it. If not for the big shots he made, some on the biggest stage in the world (NY) and the media attention that came with them, he'd basically be Michael Redd only skinnier.

Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell and Dave Cowens are lightyears ahead of Rodman on the "Greatest Rebounder Ever" category but the reason why Rodman isn't going in is because he was a menace. He wore dresses...he was the Babe Ruth of technical fouls. Always starting trouble - it kept him out of All-Star games later on in his career...guys like Jayson Williams were making the team while averaging 11 rebounds and Rodman was getting more, but he didnt get in because of his rep.

Rodman doesn't have 7 rings.

Robert H. Horry on the other hand...does.

Those guys have their share of chips but they don't have 7 like Horry does. Steve Kerr had one clutch game-winner in his playoff career. John Salley could barely get off the bench for at least 2 of his titles so those arent as legit for him. Harper was good but he didnt have clutch shots like Horry does.

One of the things i dont like about the hall is that its always been very political. Elgin Baylor, one of the greatest players in the history of the sport doesn't get elected during his first time of eligibility but Bill Bradley does (just cause he's white and became a politician). Was Bill Bradley a better player than ELGIN BAYLOR? Are you kidding me!?

It's political.

Every year they HAVE to elect a coach, they HAVE to elect a female player...listen, there are women who are every bit as good and even better than some guys playing right now but why not just elect the best canidates period, male or female, player or coach, or gm or announcer?

The same is true in the playoffs - there's a lot of politics in the playoffs too.

In the regular season, if you sneeze you get a flagrant foul. But in the playoffs in the 4th quarter, you can take a guys head off and barely be called for a foul with no further penalty.

Where does this "Swallow the Whistle" philosophy come from? Aren't the rules the rules? Isn't a foul a foul? Shouldn't Kobe Bryant be called for a technical for throwing an elbow and shouldnt the game-winner the Lakers hit be called off because of Kobe's elbow? Nope...just because he's Kobe Bryant playing in the Finals we have to swallow the whistle.

Michael Jordan in game 7 SHOVES OFF on Bryan Russell and knocks him down before hitting the game-winner. If anyone else did that it would be an offensive foul. Michael, I love ya. Each and every championship we have was on your back - but that doesn't mean you didnt commit an offensive foul on Russell.

If I were a ref i wouldnt care who you are or what game it was. If you commit a foul im making the call.

I said all that to say this - there's too much politics in sports.

Remove the politics and all the subjective balloting and Robert Horry would take his rightful place in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Yes he was a role player. Yes he had limited skill and simple stats.

But the guy has 7 rings. That's more than Jordan, more than Bird, more than Magic, more than Kareem - and without him, those teams wouldn't have won a single one. ANyone disagree with that - check the tape. Check the tape and you'll see Shaq kickin' it out to R-Horry and you'll see Duncan kickin' it out to R-Horry and you'll see Big Shot Bob knocking down game-winner after game-winner after game-winner in the NBA FINALS, where it matters more than anywhere else on earth.

For Horry and Horry alone an exceptionary rule should be implemented. If you have 6 or more and you played a significant role in earning them, you are in.

I actually agree with you that Horry is interesting. Not necessarily that he should get in, but I think it's interesting.

There's a huge difference between him and guys like Kerr or whomever because Horry hit so many game winners during his career in the playoffs. Horry is possibly one of the most clutch playoff performers in the history of the NBA. Because of that, I think he deserves something special.

The argument that it's a college and NBA hall of fame is meaningless. No one is in for college as a player that I'm aware of. It's only for college coaches, which is also a joke. The basketball hall of fame is a joke anyway, i get mad whenever I talk about it.

As for Rodman, he should definitely get in, and I'd be very surprised if he doesn't get in.

Robert Horry has played a lot of playoff games. If you play enough games you're going to hit some shots.

He's been a role player quality guy throughout his career, and he's been a role player quality guy throughout his playoff career. Everyone talks about how clutch he is, but they conveniently forget the bad moments. For example, he went 0-18 on threes for the Lakers vs Spurs series in 2003. Basically a lot of the praise Horry gets is selective memory.

I'm not trying to say he's crap. He's been a good role player for a long time, and good role players are important, but he's a long long way from a hall of fame quality guy.

Robert Horry should be no where near the Hall of Fame. Bottom line.

He won titles because he was on great teams. He didn't make those teams great.

He knocked down some big shots, and he deserves credit for that. But it's not like those plays were drawn up for Horry and the D was focused on him.

If Vlade Divac grabs the rebound instead of playing volleyball, the Kings win that game. Horry has had his moments, but he's not even n all-star caliber player.

As for Rodman, you can say inch for inch, pound for pound, he's the best rebounder ever.

The stats from back in the day were just odd to me. Elgin Baylor was 6'5 but had a season where he averaged 19 rebounds a game. How did that happen? Would someone 6'5 average 19 boards today? Or in the 90's or 80's? Rodman's career high was a little over 18 and I thought that was amazing. No one ha averaged that much since. Was a 6'5 Baylor a better rebounder than Dwight Howard? The stats from back then are just strange.

My theory is that the great players from back then we SO much better than the next tier that they just dominated. If you put guys like Chamberlain, Baylor, Robertson in today's game, they would still be great. But you wouldn't be seeing 50ppg and 20 rebs for averages.

Oh wow. My bad - i completely forgot about that. In the post i think i said it was Shaq who threw it out to him but it was Divac wasn't it? He was just in the absolute perfect place at the absolute perfect time and if one thing went differently (divac not throwing it out there) Horry wouldn't have had that shot (also...in my opnion that series was SO favoring the Lakers).

About Baylor, i think Baylor was one of those extra special cases. Kind of like how Charles Barkley was a 6-4" power forward and yet was one of the greatest rebounders. How Hakeem Olajuwon was a center but could run like a point guard. Elgin Baylor, though smaller than most, just happened to be a high-flyin' rebounding mo-chine! No way he's a better rebounder than Howard and no way he'd get that many today but i bet you he'd get at least 10 because he was special.

i doubt he's been wearing high hills, so at worse he's 6'6. at worse. probably close to 6'7, which is still remarkable for a HOF PF, but still much better than 6'4

So basically he's Michael Beasley size.

First, the NBA HOF is a joke.

Second, players don't get in for college play. That's only for coaches.

Third, Rodman will get in eventually IMO.

Fourth, Robert Horry is an interesting case to me, not because he's deserving, because it'd be hard to qualify him. On the other hand, the man may have hit more playoff game winning shots than any player in the history of the NBA. He's got to be in the top five in that category.

I think that one thing alone, makes him a very interesting niche candidate for the hall of fame even though I don't think you could really let him in.

Rodman will get in because he's probably the greatest rebounder ever, and I don't mean pound for pound, I mean out of all players. When Rodman grabbed his 18.7 rebounds, that was out of 44.3 for his team. When Baylor did it, his 19.7 were out of 73.6. The old guys stats are inflated by pace and low shooting percentages. Rodman grabbed a higher percentage of rebounds for his team than Wilt, despite Wilt playing basically every minute of every game.

Horry on the other hand has no skill you can point to and say he's really good at it. I mean he's not even that good a three point shooter, 34% regular season and 36% playoffs is OK but nothing exceptional.
