Late on posting this, but just remembered.

A couple weeks ago I got a call from some number I'd never seen before, so I sent it to VM.

Same number immediately called again, to VM.

Again immediately.... VM 1 more time.... I've had robo calls do this.

Fourth time, immediately... ok fine let's see who it is.

I pick up... "Hello?"

"STOP FUCKING CALLING ME"

"I'm sorry, who is this?"

"I SAID STOP FUCKING CALLING ME, YOU'VE BEEN CALLING ME ALL FUCKING MORNING"

I want to pause here.... this guy was getting spammed, supposedly by my number, but more than likely by a block of Google Voice numbers and mine was in the range so he dialed until he got one with a person behind it.

And even if I buy that my number was calling him over and over all morning.... didn't he, at some point, answer one of the calls? And find a robot message that was annoying him, rather than me?

Ok, let's proceed.... me responding to "I SAID STOP FUCKING CALLING ME, YOU'VE BEEN CALLING ME ALL FUCKING MORNING"

"Listen, I don't know who you are, but I haven't been calling you."

"THEN WHY HAVE I BEEN GETTING CALLS ALL FUCKING MORNING"

Btw he sounds like your average white 22-26 year old who understands the world roughly as well as he did when he was 7.

"I don't know who has been calling you, but it sounds like you're being robo called.... you've reached a real person here, and I've not been calling you"

"WELL... OK I MEAN.... THEN WHY AM I GETTING ALL THESE CALLS"

Oh caveman starting to kinda get it.

"You're likely getting robo called, I get em too, they are quite annoying, but I can assure you it isn't me calling you... again I am a real person and I haven't been calling you."

"OK... Ok... Fine then.... Ok sorry.... man just... like... whatever, bye I guess"

"Good luck"

call ends.

I'm not 100% certain if a robo call was somehow spoofing my number or if this guy was getting robo spammed and just decided to try calling any number in the block until he got a person, but either way the ultra shouting aggro af that he had, and then that steep drop when I was generally polite to him.... was pretty lolz.

I still feel bad I didn't get the chance to explain to him he could block numbers from calling his phone.... I remembered as I blocked his number lol.

TL;DR for @Grimson

AGGRO AF WAS GETTING ROBOCALLED AND @Ares EXPLAINED ROBOCALLS TO HIM AND HE IMMEDIATELY CALMED THE **** DOWN.

Actually...

You have been a victim of 'slamming'. You may want to check to see if your phone number is port locked as one level of security.

Had the same thing happen with my work phone- got a call from a guy asking why I was calling him. apparently places are spoofing random numbers, because there were no records of call between the 2 numbers.

I am also in the habit of googling numbers I dont know, and many of them come from random cell numbers that are likely having the same thing happen.

Slamming, as in where someone switches your carrier service without your consent?

Far as I can tell, that has not happened.

Also not sure how that would coincide with some aggro 20-something calling and yelling at me?

Elaborate plz

The absolute worse are medical insurance companies. I was looking for insurance for my wife and asked for a quote from a site. Big fucking mistake. Immediately got 300 calls. If you block them they simply modify outbound caller id which is simple to do on auto dialers.

Open enrollment is over so hopefully all those brokers go out and get a real job.

I'm not saying what they used your phone number for is not accurate, but how they managed to spoof your number is . Basically steal port and still remain functional for your outgoing calls until your carrier blocks them (unless you are using Google Voice, Dingtone, freedompop services that share numbers). Rough thing too, if you have any positive ID link through a mobile number via an app, SIP intermediary system, or poorly secured record through the provider, then even after blocking, they can just re-fetch and slam allover again.

So you might want to make sure your port is locked, cross-check outgoing data on any suspicious apps you have installed, or whatever to investigate. The person obtaining your number for use isn't just doing an old-school caller-ID spoof.

I once put my info into Lending Tree when I was starting the process of looking for a mortgage.

They called me like 9 times a day for several weeks.

More and more I'm seeing robo calls spoof what appear to be real numbers. I hardly ever pick up calls from numbers I do not recognize (much to the dismay of Comcast) unless I have made an appointment of some sort or am expecting a delivery.

These spammers must be pretty good at spoofing numbers now because I really can't tell the difference between what is a robo caller and the dryer vent cleaner sometimes.

I am not following entirely.

So they ported my phone to a new carrier, but ATT is still my carrier.

I have 2-factor auth with ATT.

That's good then. Slows down, but does not prevent every form of spoofing or slamming. You still want to look for ways to fortify your number and maybe to the same extent, your identity.

And yes, the way slamming works, is you can split services or even use the original service provider. It's exploiting the automated end of the system by either stealing credentials or information. And if there is no physical authentication combined with a digital method, then 2FA is just doing the same thing twice unfortunately. Good, better than just a SSN and Name/Email with a password.

I used to run honeypots/honeyholes near open wifi spots (legally) to test networks. Along with a number of things, you can steal someone's phone number and all handshake creds if they don't take the measures to fortify their data.

Progress. I don't know *how* they did it, but taking some steps to prevent it actively goes a long way.

I recently (3-4 months ago) went thru and changed every single password on every account where I was using an old common password core.

All of them are distinct, long, complex passwords.

I scanned my phone with Kaspersky, found nothing... locked down my apps.

About 5 times a day I get extended warranty calls. Even though I bought the 5 year 100k warranty when I bought my car.
