Lennon was never impressed with sales volume. He would scoff at that and talk about the quality and innovation of the songs. The last great albumn the Stones made was Goat's Head Soup

You're right, they weren't Beatles copies because they were shitty albums and the Beatles never made a shitty album.

You can find a lot of negative remarks made about the stones by John... but not so much the other way around.
The Stones were still huge in the late 70s and John was all but forgotten (at least by the youth at the end of that decade... lets face it... not too many kids were buying Woman) That and the Beatles were considered bubble gum by then...
I "Imagine" John may have been a bit jealous.... or at least bugged that the stones were still bigger than life

I loved the Beatles... and most of the stuff the guys did solo after... along with most of the British invasion bands... what a great time for music
