Router intrique

I have an Asus router that has been working great. Saturday the internet is running slow, 3mb download. Check the cable modem (to laptop via ethernet) and I'm getting 125MB down so it's not comcast. Take the router back to best buy and the Geek Squad says it's the router. I'm thinking this doesnt make sense. Typically with electronics things work or they dont work. I would suspect instead of getting 3 mb down that I would get nothing. They give me a new Asus and I'm back to 125mb and CSS Mods trolling at warp speed.
