[quote name="fanof19"]Here's one of Barry's
If this all sounds familiar, there's probably a good reason.
Of Brian Campbell's $56 million deal, Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon said, "We had to make a statement.''
Consider what then-Cubs president John McDonough said when his club signed Alfonso Soriano: "We had to make a statement to our fans.''
Interesting.
In his first big move as the boss, McDonough sent GM Jim Hendry out on the free-agent market, told him to get the biggest name for any amount of money, and overpay if you must, but get Soriano - even as most in baseball believed Soriano to be one-dimensional and consistently unable to perform in the postseason.
The result was almost universally cheered in the Chicago media, which led to increased ticket sales, bigger radio and TV advertising revenue, and a splendid convention.
Now, the Hawks have done essentially the same thing.
Campbell is a wing dressed in a defenseman's sweater, exceptional on the power play and moving the puck, but often invisible in his own end.
Tallon and his scouts must have watched Campbell play for San Jose in the Western Conference playoffs - which are more physical than the East - noted how small he looked when the game got rough, and how ineffective he was at the most crucial time of the season.
If the coaches hated Dustin Byfuglien's turnovers, how are they going to like Campbell's for $7 million a year?
To his credit, Tallon admitted he overpaid and even explained why he did it. As Hendry was told to get whoever was perceived as the top free agent at any price, so was Tallon. He followed orders, so this purchase rests only partially on his shoulders.
Soriano came here because the Cubs offered the most money, and who can blame him?
It's no sin for Brian Campbell or Cristobal Huet to drain every possible dollar out of free agency, just as Nikolai Khabibulin and Adrian Aucoin did a few years back, when they chose money over other factors, like a chance to win.
But what's really key here is that no one sells hope and sunshine - not to mention tickets - better than John McDonough.
The buzz is back, and the Hawks Convention will feature cheerleading the likes of which the Hawks haven't seen in decades.
The fans will be able to celebrate a championship in July, just as Cubs fans do every January.
Let's just hope the Hawks go deeper than the Cubs did last year - when Soriano disappeared and the Cubs went home early.
Ivan Boldirev-ing
GM Dale Tallon is playing it perfectly in saying he intends to keep and play both Nikolai Khabibulin ($6.7 million) and Cristobal Huet ($5.6 million) in net next season.
Of course this will never work and Tallon wants desperately to move Khabibulin, but he can't announce that and risk having to pay too much of that salary when he gets the deal done.
Along the same lines, how fast can Tallon get the poisonous Martin Havlat ($6 million) a plane ticket to Whocareswhere?
Phil Housley-ing
The power play, one of the worst in hockey for about a decade, should improve dramatically with the addition of specialist Brian Campbell.
He's got his critics, to be sure, but the Hawks have guaranteed with Campbell that the power play will be one of the best in the NHL next season.
It's not Campbell's fault the Hawks paid him to be Bobby Orr, because he can't possibly live up to the hype or that pressure, just as Soriano couldn't be Willie Mays when he doesn't even own a glove.
Bank it
What's Duncan Keith going to be worth considering he's probably a better all-around hockey player than the man the Hawks just gave $56 million?
Keith's at $1.6 million and $1.9 million the next two years, and then he's a restricted free agent.
The Hawks have a bunch of kids coming due within a couple of years, including The Big Two, and there'll be tagging issues left and right.
This isn't baseball where you can backload contracts all day and never pay a price. At some point, the Hawks will have to make some tough calls.
Front and center
When the Hawks dump some dead weight and salary, how about finding a No. 1 center to take the load off Jonathan Toews, like Wayne Gretzky just did for Kyle Turris in Phoenix?
"We got Olli Jokinen,'' said Gretzky, "so that Turris wouldn't have to face the other team's best every shift. That's a lot for a kid.''
Hmmm.
Runneth over
Not every free agent takes the best deal or most money. Marian Hossa (one year, $7.4 million) and Ty Conklin (one year, $750,000) signed with Detroit for less - and a chance to win a Stanley Cup.
Water bottle shot
Speaking of Detroit, should the Hawks have saved some money for next summer, when Henrik Zetterberg will be an unrestricted free agent?
Final four?
The way the Hawks have sold the upcoming season, anything short of the Western Conference finals appearance will be a huge disappointment.
They might want to get off to a fast start in October, because the pressure on Campbell, the super sophs, the coaching staff and the GM will increase dramatically if they don't.
Bull stuff
Bulls GM John Paxson could take a page from Dale Tallon's book and not announce to the NBA that he intends to work through the Ben Gordon and Luol Deng contracts before deciding whether to trade Kirk Hinrich.
When he does that, he shows his cards and risks getting nothing in return for Hinrich.
And finally-
Comedian Alex Kaseberg: "With the Cubs and White Sox leading their divisions, and in the event both make the playoffs and reach the World Series, Illinois farmers are being advised to clip the wings on their pigs earlier than usual this fall.''

you should send this to the ass. I called him out on FB and he told me reading was a skill. Apparently writing does not use the same skill. I then told him his hands on the Stanely Cup were a disgrace to the Stanley Cup. He then blocked me LOL.
TJ he's been going to Hawk games pretty regularly since McMoron came aboard. Before than I rarely saw hime because everyone there knew he was a ******.
