They brought this up on draft day but they weren’t certain for who and said it might have been for a db. I’m pretty sure they would have gone after a qb

The whole thing is kinda funny in this sense. All offseason people were pissed that the bears made the playoffs which put them out of contention for any of the top QBs. In all reality they ended up in the sweet spot. The bears had a trump card over Minn able to offer a future 1st rounder because of their draft slot. Which would have been a massive over pay for the Vikings @14. The Saints pick was too far back for Gettleman at 28 overall.

Had the bears been lumped in with teams like Minn and the Patriots as far as draft position this whole thing could look very different right now.

I find it very hard to believe the Giants were willing to move back from 11 all the way to 28. I'm sure the Saints called, but it never really went anywhere. The Vikings, on the other hand, they're the ones that had a shot given their draft position. Either way, I'm glad we ended up with him.

I don't think this is right.. had the bears not lucked into 2 wins they'd be sitting at 6-10 (?) which would have made them drafting 7th or 8th, one of those losses would have been to Detoilet.

Certainly possible but Minn is still in play there if they're close in draft position. None of those teams seemed very interested in moving.

Pretty sure you are correct in that Minny did not want to commit a 1st rounder and the Saints were too far back to make a difference.

I read somewhere that the Saints wanted Sewell, which would be a bad trade up in a deep OT class given their cap problems and depth needed

a lot of people want Sewell...he was by far the best OT, but if they were talking to the Giants it was for Fields

Yea. After Smith, there was a big drop off at WR. They arguably reached for Toney at 20 which would have been a big reach at 14.

More times then not that could have bitten them in the ass. Alot of stars had to align for this whole thing to be possible.

Here's another one: what if Philly wasn't able to jump the Giants for their guy. Gettleman would have taken him. Then philly could have peeled back with Minn so they could have taken Fields.

Sounds like the trade between the Giants and Bears was agree to before the draft if Chicago's player was there. With the GM's being friends for a Long time doubt any team could have got him to go back on his word. The tricky part was 8 and 9. They fooled most people going CBs.

The Giants were taking D. Smith had he been on the board. Philly knew it. But to your point Pace did talk with Gettleman the morning of.
