Samardzija to be shut down after Saturday's start.

That should put him at 172 innings or so for the season. Well done, Jeff. Unless you get destroyed on Saturday, of course. Then you just suck :D

I don't see anything wrong with this pitcher shut down. No need to put Samardzija at any risk in a lost season.

This has worked out perfectly. He should be all set to be stretched out to 200 innings next season, and the Cubs might have found themselves a front half of the rotation starter, i.e. a 3 starter at worst and maybe a 2.

I think he could easily be a top two, three at worst assuming we have Garza and another better option at the top. His W/L record would be way different if he could get some run support. See Garza 2011. His biggest problem seems to be keeping the ball in the park.

I'm not talking about in terms of the Cubs starting staff. He would easily be number 1 if the Cubs dealt Garza in the offseason, which I am not certain will happen. I am talking in terms of what scouts call a number 1, 2, and 3 pitcher.

Ah, gotcha. I still seem to be a rare fan that hopes we keep Garza around.

I think Garza might be a good keep if the FO can get him to come down on his initial asking price due to the injury. Otherwise, I just don't really see him as being worth $16M per at this point. Maybe he will get there in a couple of seasons, but hopefully we can get him on the cheap for those years. He makes a fine #2 when he's on and healthy.

I'm ambivalent. If they want to offer him arb (at a slight discount from the projected $13MM or so) that would be fine as long as they can trade him afterwards, hopefully before the season so the other team can get the comp pick. If not, then they should try to extend him on the relatively cheap because someone has to throw the ball every five days and not completely suck.

Kinda in the same boat. I also think that extending him somewhat cheaply this winter might make him a stronger trade target.

I think Shark has more upside than Garza, personally...but I may be alone in that boat.

Garza's at that point in his career where he no longer has an upside.

Says the worst beat writer in all of baseball.... proven inaccurate 98% of the time. So... expect Shark to be the #4 guy next year.

 Nice.

I think it's possible though. They miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight bring Volstad back (there's no way he's 1 or 2). Depending on how Garza comes back from his injury he's either 1 or 2. Depending on whether they sign Greinke or Edwin Jackson etc Samardzija could be pushed all the way back to 3 or 4. Tough to say right now, but if he can improve on this season he's basically the de facto #1 starter based on the copious piles of crap we have that are "Major League ready" :D

Well, if they don't go out and get someone this winter... then it's obvious he's either the #1 or #2 depending on whether or not Garza is traded. However, if they sign someone like Jackson and keep Garza... then Shark is #3 at best... and could end up supplanted by Vizcaino.

When's Vizcaino's ETA for return from Tommy John?

For the record I'd be more than okay if Samardzija were the #4 starter based on his performance this season, as it would indicate that we have three better starters by default in the rotation :D
