Jerry Sandusky jury has many ties to Penn State

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- A jury was selected Wednesday in the child molestation scandal that brought down Joe Paterno, and the makeup of the panel left no doubt this is Penn State country.

The seven women and five men who will hear opening statements on Monday in the case against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky include an engineering administrative assistant at Penn State, a dance teacher in the school's continuing education program and a professor who has on the faculty for 24 years.

They also include a Penn State senior, a retired soil sciences professor with 37 years at the university, a man with bachelor's and master's degrees from the school and a woman who's been a football season ticket holder since the 1970s.

One of four alternate jurors was selected Wednesday, and three more were expected to be picked Wednesday afternoon.

Sandusky faces a total of 52 counts involving 10 alleged victims over a 15-year span. He has denied the allegations, and defense lawyer Joseph Amendola's potential witness list has seven Sandusky family members on it, including his wife, Dottie, and two sons.

Amendola on Wednesday asked again for a delay, alleging that an ABC News report saying that the accuser identified in court papers as Victim 4 would be the first witness violated the judge's gag order. Judge John Cleland denied Amendola's request.

The lawyers who will argue the case said on the way into the courthouse Wednesday they were happy with the process so far.

Amendola arrived with Sandusky just after 8:15 a.m. and told reporters he was confident the nine jurors picked on Tuesday would give them a "fair shake." Sandusky himself did not say anything as he entered the building in Bellefonte, about 12 miles from the university where he once worked.

Lead prosecutor Joseph McGettigan, a senior deputy attorney general, said that jury selection was "so far, so good."

Besides the panelists with ties to Penn State, jurors include a 24-year-old man with plans to attend auto technician school, a mother of two who works in retail, a retired school bus driver, an engineer with no Penn State ties and a property management firm employee.

The breadth of Penn State ties to the community was evident again in the second day of jury selection. Of the 40 questioned Wednesday, 10 indicated they worked at Penn State. Nineteen indicated either they or a close family member had volunteered or financially contributed to the university.

Fifteen said they knew someone on the prosecution's witness list, while 20 knew someone on Sandusky's defense list.

Sandusky was quiet in court, leafing through a binder with plastic-covered pages during most of a 45-minute hearing early Wednesday -- pausing at times when Judge John Cleland commented from the bench.

More than 600 jury duty summonses were sent out to residents in Centre County, the home of Penn State University's main campus.

Sandusky's lawyer won the right to have jurors chosen from the local community, and prosecutors had concerns that Centre County might prove to be nearly synonymous with Penn State.

Of the 40 jurors initially questioned Wednesday, 32 had children. Eighteen indicated they had jobs or other responsibilities in which they were legally required to report instances of alleged child abuse.

All the jurors will have to say under oath they can be impartial.

Besides Sandusky family members, other names on the defense's potential witness list include the widow and son of Joe Paterno, the late Hall of Fame football coach who was dismissed by university trustees in the aftermath of Sandusky's arrest.

Assistant coach Mike McQueary and his father are also on the defense witness list. Mike McQueary, on leave from the team, has said he saw Sandusky naked in a team shower with a young boy more than a decade ago and reported it to Paterno. Mike McQueary is also on the prosecution's list, along with young men who have accused Sandusky of abusing them.

The Feds will smoke him with the Mann Act, but for fucks sake look at this jury!!

What was the prosecution thinking allowing them on the jury? I hate to think what the rest of the jury pool looked like.

In my mind having a heavy PSU jury is only worse for him, in that area you can't really get out of it. But he's a huge embarrassment to the university and all involved already. Having a heavy PSU jury, if they were to let him off it would only reinforce what he has done, and make things incredibly worse. It would be not only the sentiment that PSU let's this thing happen, but that the community and the law supports it. Only place he's walking is into a federal pound me in the ass prison.

That's the problem with a college town. Everyone in the town is somehow tied to the school. But hopefully they will be open minded and listen to the evidence. i mean if we Hawks fans were on a jury and Toews or someone was on trial I hope we would be objective. Although I know if a Canuck was on trial it would be impossible.

This just sounds like an easy way for either side to call for a mistrial...

As mentioned, in a college town (especially one that was basically created by PSU and florished because of JoePa) it's near impossible to have a juror not connected in anyway to the university. And what does it matter, for my reasoning which I stated I don't see why you would think that they would be bias in anyway toward sandusky? More likely Ymono is right and this is all a walk through for the appeal in a different jurisdiction.

She had to know something. How could you just go oh my husband is going downstairs to kiss little boys goodnight. I find it hard to believe you wouldn't be suspicious about that.

I don't want to make a witch hunt out of this, People that admitted knowing about it, sure. But when you have to prove someone knew about it? Forget it, because the prosecution will start throwing plea deals at people who will incriminate others to lighten their own load and innocent people may be getting thrown to the wolves.

You do a disservice to every victim, and who knows how many of them there really are, to not further pursue it. The first reports of child molestation came out almost 15 years ago. There are more people involved in this. Maybe that's asking for too much from the legal/justice system of this country, and I certainly wouldn't doubt it, but simply for those kids' sakes if for nothing else, they have to try.

Sounds like there were emails between some that were part of the program and the school discussing his behavior with the youts. Emails that were acquired before and charges were made.

There's no way Sandusky is allowed to get away with this for over a decade without the silence and cooperation of more than a handful of people. He built up an entire foundation (Second Mile, which started up in the late 70s) in order to farm the children that he would molest. The sad truth is that he is probably just the tip of the iceberg, might have been part of a bigger child pedophile ring.

I see an ending like Daumer's for him (sooner or later).
