Source confirms @kschwarb12 will be with the Cubs for 6 days to DH, etc. Then to Triple-A.

My guess is they planned to move him to AAA around this time(he has 238 PAs not playing every day compared to the 297 IIRC Bryant had). I'm not following the AAA/AA schedule but there might be a lull in games and they have a short bench so they figured why not.

I don't mind the call up. I just think its weird. If he comes up and crushes for 6 days, they most likely still will send him down and the media and the fans are going to go nuts. I just think it could be a little bit of a distraction but whatever. Line up could always use a good lefty. If he debuts as a DH, he would be the first player in Cubs history.

Yeah it is kind of weird in that regard. Reminds me a bit of Alcantara last year where he was up for Barney's injury hit well and then stayed up. But given they apparently view Schwarber as a C i don't think they keep him up like they did with AA.

Although this is weird, I think this is a good idea. It gives the front office an idea of where his hitting and catching development is at.

Doubt he catches any games. .

He most likely only sees action as a DH and PH

Basically has to be him DHing because atm they have Baxter, Herrera and Ross as their only bench guys AFAIK. That gives you one OF, one IF, and one C. Any injury they are all you got.

They are going to expose him to major league pitching. If he hits it, all the better.

He will more than likely be up at the end of the year too.

Maddon now has some flexibility, plus a third catcher if need be.

I know he won't catch, but being around veterans surely won't hurt.

He has deserved a sniff of the majors. Hopefully he will give us something to be excited about in the short time that he is up.

I think the taste of the majors might be a "how ready is he?" in case of a tight race in sept. If he is crap you're probably more likely to go after someone in trade but if he crushes you might view him as someone who impacts post trade deadline more than your typical trade types.

CHICAGO -- Kyle Schwarber, the Cubs' top pick in the 2014 Draft, will be promoted to the big league team for six days to be the designated hitter in Interleague games at Cleveland and at Minnesota.

The young catcher, who was the fourth player taken overall in the Draft, will report to the Cubs on Tuesday in Chicago. President of baseball operations Theo Epstein announced the move after Schwarber's game with Double-A Tennessee on Monday night.

"Kyle has had a tremendous developmental year so far behind the plate, with the bat, and as a leader," Epstein said. "His next stop is to continue his development as a catcher at Triple-A. First, however, he is going to join the Major League team for six days to contribute as a designated hitter, as a bat off the bench, and as a third catcher."
Schwarber commented on the call-up on his Twitter account: "Grateful for this opportunity that I'm going to get! Very excited to compete and learn! #Cubs"

Epstein said this brief stint in the big leagues should benefit Schwarber, 22, the organization's No. 2 overall prospect according to MLB.com.
"He will also use the time in the big leagues to experience first-hand all that goes into being a Major League catcher," Epstein said. "Regardless of how this week goes, Kyle will head to Triple-A after Sunday's game."
The Cubs play two games against the Indians, starting Wednesday, and then have a three-game series against the Twins.
One of Schwarber's teammates with Tennessee, Daniel Vogelbach, tweeted congratulations to Schwarber.

Schwarber went 2-for-5 on Monday with three RBIs, and was batting .320 at Tennessee. He has hit 13 home runs, 10 doubles and one triple with 39 RBIs. In the Cubs' two games in Detroit, Miguel Montero and Mike Baxter were the designated hitters.

So the plan is 6 as a DH then to AAA as the starting catcher.

There was a clear need for a legit DH going on. We all knew it after the last series. They are trying to win games here and Schwarber is a legit hitting talent with a advanced approach.

That said 6 days dosen't change much of anything in his time line. If anything that brief lookie look will give him some insight on what he needs to work on at AAA.

Add to it Rangers did the same thing recently with Joey Gallo. Bumped him up from AA. Not a unique thing at all.

That said, I believe now if they are still in a wild card spot they will promote Schwarber after Iowa's season is done to use his bat for the play offs.

Baez should be back by the dead line. I think the biggest move would be going after Ben Zorbrist to bolster the bench. I doubt they will make any move that would deplete the farm.

It was unexpected. I thought they would have had him stew in AA for the season due to his catching. But it seems that his catching is actually pretty damn good and is not holding back his development. All I've heard about it is he has some good hands behind the plate. Nothing about his ability to call games. Seems a bit rushed.

Man, when I watch him its pretty rough. I think its more we can make him a good enough catcher where his bat will outplay his other short comings. Basically, think Piazza with a better arm.

Im guessing they would need to see what the price is for him. I have watched the A's the past couple of weeks. Zobrist does not look like the same player. I think the decline is real. He is 34. But, spot starting and coming off the bench wouldn't be a bad thing for a cheap price.

I wouldn't pay anything more than a 30-40 ranked prospect for him. Take the whole deal left. Nothing wrong adding to the bench.

That's not going to get it done. Someone will overpay, particularly if there's an injury. I'm fine with that though, you don't overpay for a guy like that in such an iffy competitive year.
