Got this from Jove on fb.

A warp drive would manipulate space-time itself to move a starship, taking advantage of a loophole in the laws of physics that prevent anything from moving faster than light. A concept for a real-life warp drive was suggested in 1994 by Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre, however subsequent calculations found that such a device would require prohibitive amounts of energy.

Now physicists say that adjustments can be made to the proposed warp drive that would enable it to run on significantly less energy, potentially bringing the idea back from the realm of science fiction into science.

Honestly, I don't think it will ever happen like it does in the realm of science fiction, but if it was even a remote possibility I think the idea of really getting out in space and exploring locations beyond imagine would be the single more significant event that could happen. It would really put into perspective the pettiness of all the squabbles on this planet. And open up the future to unimaginable possibilities. Can you imagine if some day you could give each group of like minded folks their own planet to go run however they want. Then trade between them would become key. Or course folks would probably still fight over earth as a holy land of some sort, but you just find a long lost passage somewhere that says god is actually from this new planet you found.

True, but isn't it possible that the black hole could be a wormhole to another place and time, the enemies we would gain from unleashing those idiots upon them.

Ok, so back on topic, not that we really were off it, but how does this work exactly.... I mean, not physically, but if they are projecting at sending something faster than the speed of light... how far does it go? And how do it not hit something in it's path. That was what I didn't always understand. did you just plot a straight course with nothing in the way and hit go and you are there before anythign can get in the way?

It is my understanding (Trekkies feel free to correct me) but a warp drive "warps" the space around it. So in theory the warp drive doesn't move the ship but the space around it.

Him.... interesting, is that what they are saying this thing could do? And I guess maybe I still don't understand how you could have movement from that instead of just time travel. Ohh... Maybe it's warping the time and bending it so that you can get from on side to the other by bending them together instead of traveling through the space.... I could see that... I mean not really, but I get the idea.

You are on the right track. My knowledge is limited but I believe that's about how it works.

Basically, space time can be bent "warped" if you will. There are multiple ways this can work. But yes basically where ever you want to go you should have a good idea of the obstacles. I would assume by the time we had a real working warp ship, we would have some pretty sophisticated interstellar mapping technologies to know exactly what is in the way. With the whole warping of space time and shit, worrying about what is in the way might not even matter.

Basically warping space time is theoretically possible and allows faster than light travel without breaking the laws of physics, because the "object" you are moving is not moving faster than light, the space bubble around it is. Einstein also theorized you could punch a hole in space time, removing the need to travel faster than light. From smart asian guy on the science channel explained space time as a flat map that can be folded bent crumpled. So he said if you draw a line from point A to point B on a map, if you fold the map to make a and b line up, you could punch a hole right through and be at your destination.....like creating your own worm hole.

The previous problem with all of these theories is the energy required to do such things. That is what this article is about they have a hypothesis that they could greatly reduce the energy needed to do so. i.e. from requiring the energy you could produce by the mass of jupiter to only requiring the energy of the mass of the voyager 1 space probe.

Alot of people think that we will never be able to travel to the stars. All I have to say is, as long as physics allow for something to be done, even if the means to do it seem impossible. I am not putting it past the human race to do it.

What things that we take for granted today, must have seemed impossible yesterday.
