He is signed through next season and we have more pressing issues to deal with. I mean Niemi and Hjalmarsson are still unsigned, the draft just ended today, and we still have a few cap issues to work out and you want Dale and the staff to start handing out large contract extensions?

I want our top young talent to be signed well into the future. Not too much to ask.

Signing Seabrook is hurting the team financially? I think not. What's hurting the team is having Huet and Campbell signed to absolutely asinine offers.

Huet will be off the books soon, no worries there.

Campbell is making a ridiculous amount of money, yeah, but it was necessary to get him here. The FA class that year wasn't very deep and Campbell benefitted.

Seabrook isn't going anywhere soon. You think he wants to leave town?

He'll re-sign when the time is right. The front office is probably making it a point to avoid another Cap-ocaplypse in the future.

I don't think he wants to leave town but I don't want to have to compete with the rest of the NHL once free agency starts up next year. I'd rather get him locked up before then.

It must be done at the right time. Seabrook is coming off a year in which he won a gold medal and the Stanley Cup, he has superior leverage right now if Bowman was to negotiate an extension. There is a possibility he has a slow start to next season or has a serious injury, why throw money at him when you can wait and watch. Just because they don't offer him an extension right now does not mean he will make it to free agency next year.

There is also the chance that Olsen or Lalonde have superior seasons like Hjalmarsson had this season and then his large contract (I am assuming he will command 4.5-5.5 million a season when his deal is up) becomes expendable.

It would be really hard to part ways with our only good, big, physical defensman. When we play against guys like Holmstrom, Franzen, Nash, and now Byfuglien he is invaluable because he is large enough to handle big power forwards but has enough skill to play a lot of ice time and not be a liability.

But yes you never know what next season will bring and there could be a situation in which Seabrook is no longer a Blackhawk.

very true, just like buff his size and skill are excellent weapons, but we saw how buff was made expendable, and as much as i hate to say it...there may be a scenario where seabs wont be a blackhawks (i hope that doesnt come true)

We have a 5.2 in cap space right now.

Get rid of Puet & we have 10.8 plus Madden's 2.7 mil off the books. (12.5 mil cutting these two)

13.5 mil. total.

This is, for the most part, correct, as I see things.

The only young defenseman on the roster I foresee who could "replace" (I'm using this term extremely loosely) Seabrook is Hammer and he's not there yet.

Lalonde is not as big and from what I've read, doesn't project as the physical, clear-the-crease kind of defenseman.

All in good time, Seabrook will receive a raise as long as he maintains his level of play.

We have already? I beg to differ.

Hjalmarsson is a player who uses his perfect positioning and defensive reads to separate players from the pucks. He is not a big body or overly physical. Lalonde is a smaller quicker guy, known for his good offensive play from the blue line.

The player that comes to mind in our system that has the potential to replace Seabrook would be Dylan Olsen. Olsen has a chance at the team this year but is still physically developing.
