Think they are two different players. I think Russell is a better defensive player who has a decent bat. I think Seager is the better pure hitter but frankly I'm not sure he stays at SS long term in which case I think you have to give Russell the edge.

Seager's future is at 3B, and subsequently, comparing 3B to SS is like comparing apples to oranges.

Honestly, when do you start questioning Russell ability with the bat ?

718 PA 156 hits 64 walks 198 Ks .242 Avg. .314 OBP

We keep waiting for him to get going and when it seems like he finds it, he falls back into a huge slump.

After getting hot for a couple weeks he back to hitting.189 in his last 15 games going just 10-53 with 21 Ks and 4 walks.

He has a whopping 38 Ks in last 109 AB
1 out of almost every 3 ABs

Bob, great music, high talent level, too bad he's gotten old. Wrote some great songs but you spelled his name wrong. It is Seger.

If he's 25-26 and still hasn't improved.

Exactly. What you want to see most out of him is OPS improvement. I really could care less about his BA if he can get that OPS to .750 or so and play the kind of defense he does at SS. In his prime I think he might slash something like .275/.350/.400, some think he'll be better and I'm probably in that camp. I don't see any reason for concern.

I like 'em both. Flip a coin. It'll be interesting to see their careers unfold. Both all star types.

And by the way, speaking of shortstops, I'm liking Baez more and more. As a prospect, I didn't realize his glove was this good, until watching him play for a while.

OPS by age for Bryce Harper

19 - .817
20 - .854
21 - .768
22 - 1.109
23 - .940

My point isn't to say that Russell will one day slug with an OPS near a thousand but more or less even the best hitters in the world need reps at a high level to become really good. Russell still only has about 750 PA at AAA or higher. I don't know if he'll ever hit .275 but I like that slash line potential someone listed with that is about what I see from him. I fully expect him in his prime to be much closer to his minor league splits in terms of K/BB rate (10%ish walk rate, 20%ish K rate).

And defensively, when his arm gets a little more consistent, he's going to be a top 3 defender.

Great post. Sometimes I think that people don't look at experience and age when they look at the performance of young players. With just 1 year in MLB and those limited high level PA to say that you doubt the ability of a player to raise his OPS by 50 points makes no sense to me. It's obvious what kind of ball player this kid is and he shows a very good plate approach although not consistently yet. That's not to say he'll ever be as good as he can be given his tools because only time can tell us that, but given his defensive skills he doesn't appear like he'll ever be much less than a 3-4 WAR player and likely have years much higher than that.
