I'll reserve my judgment until we get a good sample size here, but I'll be honest---This doesn't make me feel good.
The Athletic's Seahawks reporter Mike Dugar was on Hoge & Jahns this week to give some insight into Shane Waldron, and...uh...it wasn't good. Hoge likened it to when the Bears traded for Chase Claypool and everyone was excited and then the Steelers beat reporter told them, "Uh, hold on a sec."
It wasn't all bad, but here were the main points. (Again, these are the reporter's points, not mine):
-Waldron is really good on the first 15 scripted plays and is pretty good on early downs.
-Absolutely atrocious in situational football---3rd downs, red zone, etc. This was a constant major criticism during Waldron's time in Seattle.
-The reporter says he believes Waldron actually held back Geno Smith; he didn't elevate him.
-Pete Carroll recently called out Waldron for not maximizing talented players and utilizing them correctly. (Case in point, being too cute and putting the ball in journeymen's hands in crucial situations as a way to outwit the defense, which didn't work.)
-Just terrible in press conferences. (I personally don't care about this, but I know reporters care because they think they have god-given rights to every piece of access.)
-The reporter predicted it won't take long for Bears fans to get extremely frustrated with him, his playcalling, and his inability to adjust as the game goes on.
-The reporter believes this hire doesn't really tip the Bears' hand either way on the QB decision, but if it leans one way or the other, it might not be a Fields hire, because Shane Waldron's entire system is built on quick decisions and getting the ball out quickly.
Hoge & Jahns seemed absolutely stunned. I don't think they were expecting this. They ended the podcast immediately afterward and didn't talk much about it, lol.
A lot of things could be true. This could all be true, but Waldron learns and grows. This could all be overblown by a reporter with a grudge. This could all be true and Waldron sucks. We really don't truly know. So I'm not going to indict the guy, but this does give me pause.
