Any chance we can pry him away from New Orleans? Local guy - raised in Naperville. Super Bowl winner... great with quarterbacks............. PROVEN winner!!!! Instead of speculating on guys that can possibly do what we need, we pretty much know that this guy can give us exactly what we need. I say move mountains/open up the checkbook to get this done.

He is my #1 guy.

Is there any chance he would be looking for a change a scenery and move home? And if there is no shot, why not?

Yeah, but buyouts happen all the time. With enough money and leverage (future picks possibly?) it can possibly get done.... especially if the person of interest (Payton) wants it.... which we don't know of course.

A lot of "what ifs"....... but that is exactly why I raised the question. Is there any way possible to answer those "what ifs" in the affirmative and get this done?

Will they accept a 6th rd pick for him? If not, then no.

Do they? I can't remember too many.

For this to happen:

A. He'd have to want it.
B. The Bears would have to want it.
C. The Saints wouold have to allow it.
D. The Bears would probably have to trade A LOT.

This seems highly unrealistic to me. Just one sheep's take.

Lol. Payton is the goods man. He would be our coach for the next 15/20 years or until he retires. No more musical chairs and wishing on a star/hoping someone will turn into a great coach. Surely we can be more creative than this (6th rounder) to get this done.

I know you were joking by the way..... but I used your joke to illustrate a point nonetheless.

Think about this...... as bad as Ryan Pace was at his job.... even he managed to do what none of us saw coming.... leverage what we all thought would not be enough.... move up.... and draft a QB.

Where there is a will.... there is a way

I am not asking a new general manager to do anything he can to steal another coach. If Ryan Pace kept his job, I could sign on to giving away more picks for one of the best coaches in the NFL because Pace would have gave those picks away anyhow, so may as well get someone that knows what he his doing.

Now I am willing to let the new GM pick from a solid pool of candidates.

.....unless of course the Bears hire a HC first...then I am going to just cry....and drink....then cry more......

Seems unlikely to me with Pace gone.

I guess if we get Ireland though for GM there still could be a chance

I hear you but buyouts do happen.... more in college than in the NFL for sure.... but it can be done.

I think the key would be Payton himself.... and the Bears of course. If both parties desired it, I could see it as being a possibility.... a REMOTE possibility but something that could happen. We definitely have to at least kick the tires and see if there is interest.

Would a scenario like this work.... and is it worth it?
1). Money - and lots of it -- something the McCaskey's have been historically very cheap with but George did say yesterday that he "would spare no expense".
2). Two years of 2nd round picks... running two years straight.... then after that is done.... three years of 4th rounders.
3). All of the above picks to start in the years that we have them.

The picks would be a lot to overcome.... but is Payton enough to overcome that deficiency? Is he worth it?

I think he is.

I am not even sure that this would get the deal done but this is how something like this (in various forms) could work to make this happen...... especially if Payton and the Bears want it.

You’d need picks to trade for him that the bears don’t have.
No, just two checks with lots of zeros, one for Payton and one for Saints ownership.

Everyone has a price.

Sadly, the McCaskeys don't have the courage nor the money to write 2 blank checks.

We need a crazy rich owner who could throw huge money to get anything he wants.

Cue the Bezos talk.

Bezos, "Sean, I am offering you a 10 year 100 million dollar contract to coach the Bezos Bears."

Payton, "Thanks, that is a nice offer, but I am happy to stay in New Orleans instead of taking the same contract that Gruden took to coach the Raiders."

Bezos, "I am sorry. I wasn't clear. It is a 10 year contract with 100 million per year."

Payton, "Where do I sign?"

It doesn't have to be Bezos, just one of the ridiculously rich.

Yeah I'm gonna pass. Too many picks.

Sound logic. You should get a hold of the Bears and let them know that they should limit their search to the greater Chicago metro area, and not waste time on out of towners.

Only 1 coach in this league I’d give up picks for. Sure as hell isn’t Payton.
