First, he should not have swung at her. It isn't proper to hit a girl.

That said....

That twat should not have been fighting with the cop. I understand why he did it. He was kinda under attack by her and her friend. The situation was well out of hand by time the camera was rolling. He was trying to restrain her obviously, and thing were not in control. That falls on him a bit too for letting that get to where it was.

We also don't know what happened before all this and the circumstances.

Exactly, supposedly the 19 year old was getting a ticket for Jaywalking. Then the officer was going to arrest her for being confrontational about the ticket. As the officer was in the process of arresting the 19 year old is when things got out of hand. The 19 year old was resisting arrest. That went on for a bit and that is when the 17 year old girl in the pink came in to assist her friend. As you can see in the snippet, she not only gets between the two, but then pushes the officer. Sorry, she made contact with the officer first. She should have just stayed away and had her friend listen to the officer. Instead, she got involved and not only made physical contact but pushed the officer.

Yes, your right, he shouldn't have punched her. If anything, he should have just tazered both of them until help arrived.

She should have sat on the curb and let the officer mouth rape her while saying "We're even, right?"

Exactly. Plus figure in all of the other people that were around the situation that were probably working up the girls and putting undue pressure on the cop (who appears to be by himself).

She attacked him first. Still, the amount of force he used was not necessary not to mention you never hit a girl.

the officer certainly didn't do anything wrong. If you come at an officer it is at their discretion how to take control of the situation. The officer was obligated to use coercive force and it is in the officer's own judgment on how much force is appropriate in the given situation. Physical force is only a problem if it is excessive force.

I agree with you, he probably just could have pushed her back and over powered her. BUT, we arent the cop in situations like that you've got adrenaline pumping and are prone to gut reaction, and his gut reaction may have been to swing.

Just like soldiers that may have accidentally shot civilians, people judging him have really no right to judge, unless we ourselves have been in the same situation.

Its not as if the cop went overboard and continued beating her, he neutralized her and that was that. I don't think he should get in trouble for anything.

I do love the caption on the video....."Police Brutality."

I guess this is what our society has come to.

Cop throws one punch defending himself against an out of control whackjob and it's brutality.

What would it have been if he had tasered their dumbasses? Attempted murder?

And by the way, the rule is that you never hit a LADY.

Those 2 would hardly classify as ladies.

Being a correctional officer for 17 years, I have mixed feelings about this video. I'm a little bit puzzled how he wasn't able to restrain a teenage girl in the first place. At the first sign of resistance, I would have taken her to the ground and placed restraints on her. That being said, by the time this video comes in, there's a crowd gathered (always dangerous) and a second girl involved. He needed to get the situation under control. I still have a problem with the punch. You always use the minimum amount of force necessary to gain compliance. I'm not sure that's what happened here, although I'd like to see the entire incident. I would much rather have used pepper spray than hit a 17 yr old girl in the face. It will be interesting to see if the city stands behind this officer. I'd be worried if I were him.

I agree that the media has its fun with showing only what they want. One hardly knows the entirety of the situation. I think I recognize that other snippet in there as one that occured in British Columbia, 15 year old girl. Looking at the vid, wow that officer was really tough on that girl. Facts are that see was high as a kite and carrying on for some time before that going after everyone in the station. Oh yeah, her mother is seeking damages.

I fucking hate people like this. As said earlier, resist arrest, attack a cop, WTF do you expect?

[quote name="Mikita's Helmet"]Teen Punched by Seattle Cop Apologizes

I bet this was one of those "the situation blew up out of control so to help quell it we need the girl to apologize so we'll make it a consequence of her charges being reduced."

Also, the most telling part of the article.

CBS affiliate KIRO-TV found court records showing Levias has been arrested for assaulting a police officer before. According to the documents, Levias kicked a King County Sheriff's deputy in the stomach while she resisted arrest at the Ruth Dykeman Center in Burien, Wash.

Walsh has been temporarily re-assigned.
