I wanted Ben Johnson without a question to be the bears HC. While he deserves a chance to fail I am already having doubts after this draft.

He described building the offense in Detroit from the ground up to help Goff. He said he would build this team around the players skill sets and that it would be different than in Detroit.

Then the bears went and drafted their Sam laporta at pick 10. They came back in the second round to take a speedy WR despite other glaring needs. Is burden going to be a gadget player or their Jamison Williams? Both picks seem like luxury picks to me.

They completely ignored safety despite it being an obvious issue.

I don’t hate the players they drafted, but I thought he was going to build something different in Chicago. Maybe he isn’t this genius I thought he was?

He's not building it in the same mold as the lions tho, he just compared loveland to laporta because they are more of a flex/big WR than a classic inline TE.

Maybe the bears wont run the ball as much as the lions did? Possibly supplement the run w/ tosses and screens?

His hero was john schoop, schoop threw a lot of screens. Burden specialized in YAC and short passes/screens/tosses under 10 yards.

From interviews that have happened Loveland said Ben Johnson said he was just like Sam laporta, and Loveland said that’s who he models his game after or something along those lines.

I’m not making the comparison, this is literally what Ben Johnson has said, words out of his mouth

Fans getting mad about the Bears bringing in more offensive weapons when the offense has been god awful for how long now? Can’t fix the team in one draft with a new staff. We brought in an offensive minded HC. Everyone should have expected a heavy offensive draft.

Did you completely ignore what I wrote or are you just choosing to not address the points I brought up?

Not ready to doubt Ben Johnson the coach but since he's also apparently the GM, I'll doubt Ben Johnson the GM. I hope Trapilo is ready to go to unseat Braxton (especially if his injury lingers). Hope none of the interior OL gets hurt or yikes, suddenly relying on a guy with a bad shoulder in Bates to step in. Was hoping they'd go heavy oline to build it up incase Thuney falls off a cliff due to age or Jackson doesn't return to form. Start building the depth on the oline and worry about addressing the other positions either later in the draft or sign a 1-year stopgap in free agency. Fix the oline and it makes everything easier.

A lot of the issues you bring up dont seem to be Ben Johnson issues, or at least not fully, they sound like largely general manager issues. While Poles is hopefully getting a ton of input from BJ and DA on what players they want for their scheme, its ultimately his job to make the picks and choose direction in the draft, especially with trades. GMs job is to hash out the "need to haves" from the "nice to haves", and to explain how while it would be really nice to have X taking that here means we give up Y and were probably not going to get another opportunity to get a Y elsewhere. I trust Ben Johnson to build a fantastic offense, but this is his first time being asked to build an entire team and I wonder about the quality of guidance he's being given right now. I do see enough of Poles' draft quirks/finger prints over some of these decisions that I dont think its fair to throw what you perceive as a bad moves all at Ben Johnsons feet.

I personally dont think the draft overall is bad, but I do see some missed needs that either could have been adressed or ones that could have been better addressed with more deft decision making. But that to me isnt a "woe to thee, Ben Johnson" issue - its the GM.

I forgot about Jackson, Thuney, and Dalman coming here in trades and FA. Did Jarrett and Dayo sign here?

Do you realize there are still plenty of free agents they can sign at safety that won’t count against comp picks now? Blackmon and Simmons are out there just off the top of my head.

I’m curious, who would you have drafted at 39 instead of Burden?

I do like the players they got but as @cameronkrazie86 mentioned the o line is not solved. They could’ve drafted ersery to compete at LT but opted for the other guy, maybe it works out 🤷🏻‍♂️ even though there were big paydays and upgrades to the interior they did nothing to address depth, I suppose they’re happy with what they have. Something poles has said of the OL multiple times as it was a shit show.

I refuse to believe Loveland was just a poles pick. And when they drafted a slot WR at the top of round 2 Ben Johnson and Randle el were hugging in the war room celebrating. They clearly had a lot of input there.

It might work out for them, but as I mentioned I am officially skeptical of Ben Johnson. Not doubting him, but I’m a little worried.

My primary concern as I mentioned is that Ben Johnson came off as a flexible coach not relying simply on a system. Here he is recreating the Detroit lions. Something smells a little funny. If they put up numbers like the lions all be happy, but I’m not seeing it on paper just yet.

Did you read that I said I like the players? I actually do like burden. I also like Loveland.

What is the bears salary cap and what can they do at safety this year, or will it just be Owens and byard? What would Blackmon or Simmons need to sign for to become a Chicago bear?

I would’ve liked Mukuba or watts later in the draft, personally.

I’m well aware of the roster, please don’t argue like a child, try addressing my major point. Ben Johnson stated the bears will not be the Detroit lions, yet here he is constructing the Chicago lions right in front of our eyes.

Edit: to address your question directly I would’ve taken Mike green with the 2nd 2nd round pick. If he wasn’t a system fit or was removed from the board I would’ve stayed put and drafted ersery. Hopefully travilo works out

Im sure Johnson asked for and wanted both of those players - but its first time in this position and ideally is getting strong, experienced guidance from the GM to walk through what these decisions are, and what tradeoffs are being made if you go that route. Do you feel like Ryan Poles is providing him that guidance, or is it perhaps more likely Poles is saying "**** it, wunderkid wants candy let him have candy for dinner?"

I’m a “child?” You’re in here already whining about the head coach because of your perception of how the team is being built.

Too funny…

You'll have to forgive our skepticism when you could substitute any OLine or DLine position with safety and it would be identical to the last 3 offseasons at the same time. All we saw were bargain bin replacements with nothing of substance accomplished.

I think he’s giving him what he wants. I actually appreciate that to a degree, just how they wouldn’t draft defensive players that wouldn’t fit in Allen’s system.

My concern is that Ben Johnson is clearly assembling a similar weapon set to the lions. He said he wasn’t going to do that. Do you disagree with this? It is the main concern I’m trying to point out.

You asked me if I knew the roster and if I knew they made additions to the interior OL. You don’t think that was a childish comment to make?
