MESA, Ariz. -- Chicago Cubs center fielder Marlon Byrd admitted Sunday that he does feel some pressure from Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig about working with Victor Conte, and Byrd believes some are waiting for him to test positive for performance enhancing drugs.

Conte, whose Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative triggered a federal investigation of steroids use and distribution among athletes, advises Byrd on strength training supplements. Selig recently asked Byrd and his agent to consider severing ties with Conte.

"[The pressure from MLB] does bother me sometimes," Byrd said. "But I think there should be pressure on everybody.

"I'm always going to watch what I take. I'm not going to say I have a bull's-eye on my back, but I think a lot of people are waiting for me to get my first positive test and miss 50 games. They'd like that just so they can say, 'We told you so.' I know that won't happen. I know I'm clean. I know the supplements I take are clean. I'm going to make sure of that."

Byrd is the top hitter in baseball during the spring, hitting close to .600.

Interesting that Selig would say that. Thoughts?

Selig should be preliminarily negotiating next season's CBA or something instead. They gotta get off Byrd's ass IMO.

He does more than one thing, you know? They don't have to get off Byrd's ass(tail?), they have every right to do that... it just surprises me that they would do it publicly. Seems to me like one of those things that would/should be kept private.

Byrd hasn't done anything wrong though, so they have no reason for this. If he ends up failing a drug test, they can suspend him. But otherwise, they have nothing on him.

Byrd is totally clean....I mean the guy used to be 320 pounds back in the day...He was always a big dude so I see no roids in him at all.

I understand why Selig would take issue with Byrd using Conte as his trainer but its not like he had a huge jump in numbers or anything.

Yeah, this is the main thing...he didn't have a Sammy Sosian type stretch where he wayyyy over-produced....in fact, his numbers have been relatively steady throughout his career.

Agreed, I see no reason for Selig to think hes 'roiding. I also agree, Byrds numbers have, for the most part, been pretty consistant
