Wow is all I can say. The man has this unmatched ability on the hawks to continuously score goals by timing pucks in the air. So many of his big goals have come via the tip-in. Its one of the hardest aspects of hockey that not even great players have a handle on.

And furthermore (we all know this will come up) Bickell has a great ability to deflect pucks as well, but Shaw is still better in my opinion. Its great to see Bickell creating the same havoc that we saw last year. Having these two garbage goal driven machines on the ice creates endless amount of opportunities for our D men to slap pucks at the net with absolute confidence. GO HAWKS

The biggest key to this, IMO, is simply a willingness to stand in front of the goalie when a 3-pound chunk of rubber is fired in your direction at 90+ MPH.

I don't mean to diminish the level of hand-eye coordination it takes to deflect those pucks in, but Shaw's willingness to put himself in the line of fire is a reason why he's so successful at that. Not everyone is willing to do that.

I used to play hockey and while I was never a great skater or stick-handler, I played tough and did whatever the team needed. I did a good job moving the puck and when it was cycled to the point, I'd station myself in front of the net. I tried often, but I don't remember ever tipping a wide shot and having it re-direct into the net.

I have no idea how these NHL players do it.

I guess it depends on the level that you played ... I had done it a few times -but otoh it sorta depends on how accurate the guys shooting are - I was on a team last here with a lot of 'cricket' players (literally) -and the asshats would 'pass' the puck at about ankle high - makes it pretty tough.

One timing is pretty cool too ( I used to do that in these practice sessions that they used to run at the Sydney Ice Arena ) ... mind you - I imagine all of this was well and truly in slow mo comparatively speaking... I remember they put a bucket of pucks in the net to keep it out of the way - and not that I meant to do this - but I used to one time a pass and bash all hell out of that bucket ...).

Al Secord I guess used to do it a lot as well - but I only 'guess' since I did not actually see the games on TV back then ( Dollar Bill rules... it was the 80's ) lol.
