Got a 4 month old Boxer. Awesome dog. Just noticed tonight that he hasn't eaten at all today and isn't even eating treats. We take him to day care a few days a week to help socialize him. They didn't say anything about him acting weird today. He hasn't done anything since getting home besides sleep, which is very unusual for him. He hasn't drank or ate either since getting home. Doesn't feel like he has a temp, no vomiting or diarrhea yet. Poop looked normal earlier. I'm probably more concerned then I need to be, but does anyone have any good advice on how to make him feel better or get him to eat/drink?

Is there any way he got access to chemicals?
Cleaner, coolant. Anything like that.

Dogs get like that if stomach upset... Watch close.
Likely nothing but a vet is not a bad idea if you are pretty sure something is wrong.

Vet's closed. He hasn't gotten in to anything that we have found. We usually have our eyes on him at all times. He just woke up and drank some water and ate a little. Makes me feel better.

A quick way to get them perked up is a little syrup or corn starch on their gums... just rub some on there.
Dogs' blood sugar varies much more than humans... by 10's rather than 1's. Getting their blood sugar up can perk them up. Applying a sugar sweetener to the gums gets it in their system quickly since it is a mucous membrane.

Keep a close eye on when he poops- Boxers are deep chested dogs, and deep chested dogs are prone to bloat/intestinal torsion. If he isnt pooping or eating a visit to the vet would be wise. That is nothing to mess around with.

On the bloat note- Make sure you feed him AT LEAST a couple hours before setting him free to mix it up with other dogs. A full belly and intense activity with falling over and rolling while playing can definitely lead to twisted up insides.

Puppies can wear themselves out completely and do what you just described. But, as someone else posted, be very, very careful feeding the dog. Barrell chested dogs are can get "stomach/gastric torsion" easily. It happened to our rottweiler and she thankfully lived after emergency surgery. We also had Bulldogs that were also prone. Vets and breeders gave us same advice. Feed your dog in an enclosed area. A side room, "mud room', or even their kennel. If you haven't started kennel training the puppy you need to start as soon as possible. A kennel/crate is not a punishment but a "safe place" or resting place for the dog. If you can't see the puppy it should be in its kennel. If the puppy is out of site and chews up a shoe, that is on you, not the dog. Don't let the dogs run, play, be active for at least 30 minutes after they eat and 45 is better. Just keep them from being really active. No reason to be paranoid but a little bit of effort can save a whole lot of heartache.

I don't think dogs that Young tend to bloat. I have a 9 month old dane and am now just kind of getting to the point of thinking about it happening down the road.

I guess it can happen, but not likely at that age. From what I've read, at least. I've never personally had a dog bloat.

I havent either, But we did have a horse that was prone to colic. same basic thing.

My lady and I have a friend that had a doberman prone to it- that is how she got the dog. She was a vet tech, the dog was brought in as a youngster with bloat, and the owners wanted to put it down rather than spend the money to fix him.
They left the money and walked out- didnt even want to be there.
Our friend paid to save the dog, and sent the money for euthenasia back to the owners.
She had that dog for 13 years after that point.

That's cool of her to do that. We're going to have our dane pexied when he's neutered at a year old. Hopefully that way he won't torsion if he bloats.

Dude there are pet hotels for fucks sake. It ain't cheap but you can certainly have your pet taken care of outside of your home.

How is your pup doing?

Good, good. I think he was just so wore out from day care that he didn't want to eat or drink. He had a check up at the vet yesterday and everything's good. Gotta schedule his surgery to have him snipped soon. :( Poor guy.

Good to hear that he's ok. I've had a lot of dogs and never had one snipped. He's going to hate the vet after that.
