Similar, yet better executed system in 2021?

I don't expect wholesale changes in the offense in 2021. First off, Nagy is going to Nagy. Second, Fields fits what Nagy wants to do in terms of ability to run the RPO and hopefully the ability to hit the deep ball.

I expect a reversion to the 2019 system, not in production of course, but more in theory. A healthy dose of RPO should be expected, not only was it a system staple that was only removed because Trubisky couldn't make the reads, but Fields is a fantastic running QB and early on this is his immediate strength.

The long bombs are going to be there. Those that post here know I don't give Nagy much credit, but he does have the ability to draw up some nice deep passing plays occasionally, and those just weren't executed often enough under Trubisky. Hopefully Fields changes that. That ability alone, just to increase the deep pass completion rate, could really change the complexion of this offense.

The question marks for me will be the complex bunch routes and our commitment to the run. Will Fields be comfortable making those quick reads in a system that is new to him? Which kind of leads to the second point, how much will we lean on Montgomery? He is arguably our second best offensive player behind Robinson, and we also have Cohen back this year. That's a pretty good backfield behind an O-line that has added some bulk in the run game.

Nagy is going to stick to his core concepts, that is who he is. But he is going to have to move the needle, at least early in Fields development, towards simpler concepts to keep his rookie QB from getting overwhelmed.

It is deeply burned in my memory where Foles told Nagy that he didn't have the protection needed to run a deep passing play. Patterson went from behind the LOS to some deep route that was actually a well designed play that would have worked, if only Foles had the time to set up and throw it.

Nagy gets stupid sniffing his own farts sometimes, and he gets away from the run too easily. I hope that a successful running attack convinced Nagy that he can rely on the ground game more. I hope that our line is improved enough that we can count on a few deep shots a game that make a difference. Of all the teams that drafted a QB in the first round, Chicago is most prepared for the new guy to come in and succeed (if only because SF doesn't need Lance to start, nor should he this year).

That is certainly one of Nagy's many faults, continually calling plays against the personnel and tone of the game.

But the RPO should work for us. It is a Nagy staple, Trubs couldn't run it, Foles didn't have the talent, and Fields is the perfect candidate. That should be a boost right there. You add that, plus the occasional long ball connection and the offense is upgraded. If they can do that while keeping grounded in the run game they will be fine.

Take the Bears averaging 70 snaps. You have Monty averaging 16 runs, you would like to see that bumped to 18. Tarik is going to get his 5-6 carries a game. Then you add at least 7-8 runs for Fields, that gets you over 31-32 carries, that is close to 45% running the ball.

That's a pretty good target for the Bears and good parameters to work with. What I don't want to see is
15 total runs and 45+ passes, that is going to be hell on Fields.

montgomery won’t get 16 carries, closer to 10-12, Damien Williams was not brought in for his good looks

I would like to see more than an "occasional" dragon unleashed and think he's the perfect guy for that too.

So far, I've seen nothing that tells me Nagy can create a game plan that utilizes the available talent, nor that Nagy can figure out what in-game adjustments to make based on what the opposition does.
I don't expect that to change. In short, Nagy isn't a guru.

I hope not. Montgomery averaged 15 carries in 2019 and 16 carries last year, I was hoping for at least the same this season, especially with some OL upgrades.

I don't think a 1 year, 1.25 million dollar guy is there to take away many carries from anyone.

If Williams ends up being Montys backup he will receive the amount of carries Patterson and all the other bum backups did last season. Williams is nothing more than that.

Don't forget Cohen up the gut. We missed that last season.

Some of that was on the quarterbacks and some on the line. More notably with Foles , it seemed like he had someone in his face every snap. That could have been playing better defenses too.. I guess my point is if the tackles workout marginally good then yeah, tend to agree the quick hits should be a piece of cake with JF1.

I hope I am wrong and Nagy is not going to Nagy. I often wonder if his gimmicky bullshit was because of the hand he was dealt with the offensive line and quarterback.. but then you look at the goofy shit he does in game.. idk.

Huge red flag that he's a boob and had no business getting a HC job at the highest level.

You do realize only 6 teams in the entire league ran the ball at or greater than 45% of the time last season, right?

This isn’t the 1980s nfl...

If the Bears manage to sign Morgan Moses, I would hope they run the ball 45% of the time. That would leave Moses, Ifedi (if at RG), Jenkins (based on college tape), and Whitehair (if at guard) all as very good run blockers on the line. With the Bears bringing in 2 additional RBs & getting Cohen back, combined with possibly starting a rookie QB who is a good runner himself, it would make a LOT of sense to run the ball more. It remains to be seen if Nagy can make that adjustment from 38% the last 2 years, but the Bears did run the ball over 45% (6th best) in 2018, his most successful season.

what that his offensive line sucked and limited his play calling with his already limited QB?

I think he will, hence my post, its just how much he can keep that in check and how much of it will work with the personnel changes.

The RPO stuff wasn't necessarily bad scheme, it just something Trubisky wasn't ready to handle, hence bad play calling.

Now a pass heavy scheme with a lot of 5 step drops.. that would be a scheme specific issue and I hope Nagy stays away from it. Not giving Monty his fair share of carries, that would be another issue.

Some of this stuff gets cleared up purely by upgrading the QB position, but Nagy has to get his mind away from Kansas City, even with Fields at the helm.

He can't be a boob, we never once saw Mitch try and kiss him.

I'm open to letting him prove that he can learn from the past. If Monty and Cohen thrive behind this line, and he sticks with a strong running game to open up the deep passing game, then I'd say he grew with the team and deserves to stay on until proven otherwise. A lot of his play design can be chalked up to "if everything works the way it should, then this is a golden play." Well, Nagy needs to show that he can adjust to what's going on on the field.

I think the OP poses an interesting discussion. Obviously Nagy is going to run his offense, now that he hopefully has a QB to execute it. I think we have seen him try to run his offense, but I don't know that we have really fully seen it. Not excusing him from the dismal offense in his 3 years as head coach, because that's supposed to be his strong suit. But this is how the offense has gone under Nagy

2018- New offense, more balanced, schemed open easy reads for the QB. Heard the term "101" for the offense.
2019- Tried to move to phase 2 of the offense and Mitch couldn't handle it
2020- Started with Mitch. Brought in Foles to move the offense to a new phase, but at the same time he got under center, the defenses got tougher, the OL had injuries and the time wasn't there to execute. Went back to Trubisky and really ran a fraction of the normal playbook.

Again this is on him for not being able to develop Trubisky like he was hired to do, but we really haven't seen what this offense can do if the QB has time, can read the defense, and has mobility. Once Fields gets the QB job, there won't be anything left for Nagy to hang onto. For his sake, Fields doesn't have to be great right away. He has time and he'll be fine. But for Nagy's sake, Fields has to grasp the offense quickly and not run just the 101 version. Or else, someone else will be coaching Fields going forward.

My issues with him aren’t necessarily play calling.. I mean head scratching moments for sure but for the most part his offense works when it’s executed. Dropped passes, shit blocking, penalties, and quarterback really worked against anything he tried last year..

I almost felt sorry for him but then he does the goofy shit that I am referring to.. timeout in the red zone, the decisions with personnel and short yardage/red zone and clock management .. I’m HOPING that was a result of the hand he was dealt.
