Why start a thread and then only post a link?

Somebody is being a little snippy. Good article, flag T-shirts are not ok? So I'm thinking flag boxer shorts are also a no go?

You are welcome to post whatever you want on the subject. I was just giving the link for people to read about the myths. I felt it was self explanatory. I meant it to be informative not controversial.

Ah, just a pet peeve of mine. I always felt if I were to take time to post a new thread that I would also post subject matter with it.

Forget Flag Day. It is the Army's birthday today! HOOAH!!!!

http://www.army.mil/birthday/236/

Two hundred and thirty-six years ago, the United States Army was established to defend our Nation. From the Revolutionary War to the current operations taking place around the world, our Soldiers remain Army Strong with a deep commitment to our core values and beliefs. This 236th birthday commemorates America’s Army – Soldiers, Families and Civilians – who are achieving a level of excellence that is truly Army Strong...

Another myth about the flag is the frequent paintings or movies you see with the continental armies with the stars and stripes in tow. That is historically inaccurate. If I remember correctly the stars and stripes design was not finalized until after the war, there were incarnations of it created prior, but most continental Armies would just bear the colors of their colony or unit.

Man I have several pairs of US flag boxer shorts (from various incarnations of the flags), that I always brought with me on deployments.

I just read this morning too where the Army is changing it's hats and not making them wear those beret things except as part of their dress uniforms. I guess the guys don't like them.

It was a sad day when the Army decided to allow everyone to wear a beret.

For those who do not know, all branches had reserved berets for those in only certain qualified positions with all of them being either special forces or security as far as I am aware.

bri said it well. We didn't like wearing them. It was an unpopular decision from day one. It does look nice but the practicality factor negates the appearance factor.

To correct IHF's post, GEN Eric Shinseki Ret. (former Army Chief of Staff) pretty much slammed this decision through the approval channels and everyone in the Army had NO choice in the matter. http://www.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=45776

We didn't want to wear them at the basic soldier level. We all felt much more comfortable wearing the patrol caps. The dress uniform '****' cap was a different story though and we were happy to replace them. I still feel that the black beret looks good in the dress uniform, especially with the switch to blue and black from that hideous green business suit.

When I xfered in to a VIP unit I bought me a nice pair of the dress blues and never looked back....in fact I think my green dress uniform is still rolled up in the duffle bag I stuck it in back in 1993!

Yeah the patrol cap was definitely easier. Although the only time I really wore the patrol cap was in basic.

It just annoyed me that the beret took so much effort to make sure it didnt look goofy. I remember every time i got a new one I had to shave the excess fluff off of it, soak it in hot water and mold it to my head, otherwise it would look all puffed out and ridiculous like it does in movies where people wear a beret.

The patrol cap, you just put it on your head.

You mean like most women in the army wear them?

Mine was extremely well shaped. I looked like a Ranger in mine. It is my FB pic right now in fact. Nostalgia...
