I'm really not all that militant about it, if people want to say "we" or "us" and that's how they roll I have no issues. As for me I always say "they" or "the Cubs". I'm not part of the team and that's just my preference. That all said if the Cubs win the World Series I might say "we" a few times. Hell I've been a fan for 47 years, if there's a World Series win I figure I owe myself a few days of celebratory "we's".

Not a valid analogy for me. The fans of sports can fuel the play of the athletes they support. No one is saying I made the homerun, touchdown, etc. That is your analogy. I don't believe it works at all.
