I persoanlly know of a number of healthcare workers that have been fired for taking pictures at work that included intentional or inadvertant inclusion of patients.

I always feel the criminals already know this info it is us in the general public that need to be educated. I was certainly shocked but overall not that surprised since we hear bits and pieces of stories similiar to this such as the iphone tracking.

Wow, this is a little overboard in the fear mongering, all they are doing is looking at the metadata of the file and using the location data of the gps from the phone to map. You can easily turn that off on the phone so that no picture has location data. You can just as easily turn of the location data, maybe not not the iPhone but all other phones I've easily done it. It should also be the default option on your phones camera to not have GPS data added to the pictures. There is nothing scandalous going on here. People use this data all the type to help chronologicalize (yes I can make up words) trips and places they go. This is not some seedy scary feature that criminals are using without peoples knowledge to rape kids. Is it happening? Maybe, but if you are the idiot who has all their pictures up for all the world to see anyway, then what's a little more information.

The last 45 seconds was informational. The front end of this was as Mass explained-- scare tactics.

I'm a bit surprised they didn't show a picture of a threatening, naked man with an erect penis walking into Chuck-E-Cheese with a laptop locating his next lunch rape date.

Hhahah awesome visual for all the wrong reasons. Yeah I will say the last part was interesting in that there are now sites dedicated to piecing together metadata from your photos to show you where you are. But they make it sound like you can do it to anyone anywhere at any time.

NEWSFLASH, they are pulling this data from your photos, not the kids photos, not their phones, not a magical RF tag that the government inserted at birth. Turn it off. You're kids shouldn't have smartphones if that are that young anyway. And they sure as hell shouldn't be chronicling their life online for the world to see either way. Parenting fail.

i didn't watch the vid or read the links, it's been out there for several years that when you snap a cell/smartphone pic your info is embedded. This isn't really news to anyone is it?

It's all about trying to hyper blast something to get attention here, with anything something bad can come out of it. IMO this stuff coming back up is just someone who is trying to scream pay attention to me.

Paint me ignorant then. I never knew this nor that I have an option to turn it off or how to turn it off. Secondly, I have a Droid and after watching this I still can not figure how to turn it off.

yes, lots of data about your phone and the picture and such has always been in the picture, this new scare here is that they are embedding detailed GPS location data and people are using it in very nefarious ways to completely track and stalk others, the kick here is they made it a 100 percent pedophilia scare tactic when I can think of about 20 other reasons it could be dangerous. The new info is old but not as old as people digging information out of pictures.

Hahah usually it's in the settings of the camera. I have an Evo so i don't think I can help unless your android version matches mine? On a side note, I also didn't mean to come off as a jerk in this thread if I did. It wasn't meant to be an attack on you as much as the sentimentalization and over dramatization of the story for ratings out of a news service.

ironically I too have an Evo and I think the GPS info has been in there for at least a year if not more? No surprise creeps are using it for their benefit and the "news" is sensationalizing it

Yeah, I got the Evo 3D when it came out and it was one of the first things I turned off. I keep the GPS and locating off too even though it doesn't do much cause they track me with the cell towers but it makes me feel better.

Wow - I had never heard of this Geo tracking before. Very scary and I have kids and this tool seems like a predator's dream. I have a Blackberry so now need to find where to turn this off.

Where is this being sensationalized? This is the first I had heard of the tracking by pictures posted and sent. I certainly don't the story referenced did so. I think they make a valid point to its use by others with criminal intent. As I said before, the crooks are always ahead of us average folks in knowing the illegal ways to get things.

about a year ago (if not more) when this first broke out it was all the rage for like 30 seconds... most of the "news" we see on tv is sensationalized beyond what it really is.

The thing is, even without the location meta data set, there is software (from ever private with information Google and Facebook), that does a pretty outstanding job of figuring out who is in the picture based on a pretty large database. It is not perfect, but does pretty well. The kicker is that the same software does well with structures within the picutre.

When it comes down to it, if you want to be private stay private. Once you put something on the interwebs it will be there until until the cataclysm, lich king, or alien end the world.

And as always remember this:

There will always be bad people in the world that do or want to do bad things.

If you want true privacy, move to a deserted island, build an underground habitat and don't ever go outside.
