"Brad Briggs of the Chicago Tribune reported on Nov. 6 that he was "led to believe" that Eberflus originally "signed a five-year deal that runs through the 2026 season," so he would've had two years remaining on his contract. He ends his tenure in Chicago with a 14-32 record and no playoff appearances."

If this is true the Bears Ownership/Management is more pathetic than everyone thought..
How can an NFL organization sign someone who is largely unproven, and at very best average coach, to long term contract.. Who did they tried to lock in 'long term'? A second coming of Bill Walsh?

The theory (who knows if true) is that Poles was all in on a complete tear down, essentially making year one a wasted season, and to a lesser extent, year 2 wasn’t going to be competitive either.

The thought process is Flus wanted a longer contract to kind of off set that and be known as the long term coach despite sub-par results in years 1-2.

Again, don’t know if it’s true but if so, it’s stupid. Not necessarily the 5 yr deal, but hiring the worst HC imaginable. Normally, owners will eat the contract like candy if needed so it’s not as problematic…but I’m still not convinced George was ever going to do that last off season.

Well as cheap as they signed him for, I'm guessing he requested that 5th year?

I agree but plenty of Ben Johnsom stans seem all in on him.

I’m not one of them. I’m obviously interested and would interview him, but I’m not a Ben Johnson or bust guy. There are certainly unknowns with him, but he is high on my list for sure.

Bears need a coach who can lead and hold players accountable and accept responsibility if things go bad. Fix the things that go bad instead of seeing it over and over agin like record. Eberflus didn't fix shit in the three years he was here. Only thing the Beas probably succeeded in was finding a no1 WR and franchise QB.

Where did Johnson say he wants 6 years?

He didnt say it. It was rumored. Cant find the exact article now but think it was after he said the following to the Athletic. Also concerns he didnt want to go to a big market so not sure he had the personality to survive the Chicago market.

“I think Ben is going to be very selective in where he wants to go. Every spot does not appeal to him, let’s just be honest about that. I’ve heard some things about not wanting to go to a larger market, he’s a little bit more of an introvert. I think he’s really going to be very selective in the spots he looks at. I don’t think he’s interested in all the openings. There’s definitely a chance he stays. He loves what he’s doing, he loves where he’s at…I don’t think it would be completely insane if he stays in Detroit.”

Which is pretty damn important, and they actually have 2 #1 WRs, if not 3. Other successful victories:

-Good mix of young talent on both sides of the ball
- Great cap situation
-Great draft capital

As my original post stated 'How can an NFL organization sign someone who is largely unproven, and at very best average coach, to long term contract.. '

Agree Johnson is unproven , but is also way above average and successful OC.. Something Flus was not.

IF Ben Johnson is more of an introvert, that alone scares me. Halas Hall NEEDS a HC with a confident voice who won't shy away from anybody or fall in line when accountability and honesty is sorely needed. Stop with the conservative HCs playing overly nice at the podium and spewing vanilla coach-speak, while pussing out with in-game scenarios, playing "not to lose".

HUGE assumption here & def. not saying this all applies to Ben Johnson, but all the prior coaches since Lovie (and even including him with some of those loser qualities mentioned).
