My laptop screen won't stay up for anything. hinges are a little more costly than I'd like to pay (beats buying a new computer I guess, tho)...and on top of that I have to take the entire computer apart to get to the hinges, so says Mr. Internetz. It's a Dell XPS M140 bough about 7-8 years ago. Anyone have any ideas? If nothing else, I'm going to get a metal book-end and just place the bottom part of it under the laptop...

The metal bookend's not a bad idea. You could also try sliding like a small, business card sized piece of metal in between the gaps of the hinges... if that makes any sense at all.

Or just buy a mac. :)

I'm liking the piece of metal idea. as of right now, I just have a coat hanger I've mangled and placed underneath. It's fine until I have to move - lulz...I'll take a picture.

MacGyver would have used chewing gum, paper clips, and rubber bands. :shifty:

um MacGyver carried around a roll of duct with him. He would have without a doubt used Duct tape (because its the best thing for the job). Trust me, i know this shit because Im a MacGyver expert.

7 years, not bad. I hate single coil hinges, if it goes, your SOL. At least true dual hinges are easily accessible.

yeah...it's been a good computer. I'll have to come up w/ a better fix than this...I'd like to keep the computer. I suppose I could take the screen off this, get a flat panel from somewhere and make it into a manufactured desktop....but then I'd just buy another anyway and this one would probably become obsolete.

I know you mac fanboys are always making sure everyone knows how superior your machines are to those of us w/ PCs...but there's no correlation here. My pc is 7+ years old, and a hinge broke...lulz...pretty healthy computer.

What can I say, Steve Jobs has brain washed me.

I used to use an HP, and I had nothing but problems with it - Norton was a huge memory hog (which, I suppose is my fault for being a noob and using Norton to begin with), the screen would flicker in and out between high brightness and completely dark, the battery lasted about 45 minutes off the charger after about four months, MS Word froze all the damn time, and it completely crashed after having it for only a little over a year.

Mac computers are far better machines, especially for those that don't go out of their way to learn about what harms pcs, speeds them up/slows them down, etc...no doubt. Maybe I've just been lucky.

Yeah, sort of seems like you are lucky with that. I don't think I've ever heard of a Mac lasting 7-8 years. If mine last me through the next 5 years of school, I'll bury it in my backyard when it dies and give it a 21 gun salute.

The spinning beach ball of death is really aggravating.

yeah, I noticed...that was why I put yours at the end...it counter-acted the "healthy mac" trend. ;)

Could always just do this to make your computer better:
