If you are like myself and never followed soccer, and you are thinking of giving it a whirl, this is the thread to ask questions to experienced fans of the game. You can ask about leagues, players, rules ETC. Right here!

Why dont they just stop the clock. That'd eliminate guys intentionally killing the time and prevent games ending with a subjective call.

That might be a good idea actually. Remember that one time the player faked an injury in the World Cup. Had them bring out a stretcher with time still running, and then walked away as soon as they got to the sidelines.

Exactly! I almost snapped when the Ghana players did this. It sucks. Plus, no more need to estimate stoppage time.

FIFA refs hating America doesn't help much either.

Anyway, Fire Forum now has 100 posts!

The clock won't stop b/c there are no time outs. added (or injury time) is added on for goals scored or any stoppages in play. the added time is usually estimated as :30 for a goal--the restart of play, and then however long an injury (real or not) has taken.

In other sports there is the idea of 'clock management' exists and is a part of the gamesmanship (for better or worse). It also exists in soccer.

i dont know what are penalties, and what they are called.

To better help, do you mean when play is stopped, why is it stopped? What cards mean, when they are given? What infractions cause indirect/direct free kicks? What is a penalty kick and when would it be awarded? What are those boxes around the goals on either side?

If it's any of those, I can answer--other than that, you'd need to be more specific.

He wanted to know what a penalty is called in soccer, and what some of the main penalties are.
