I am new to this board but a lifelong Cubs fan.

I am curios as to why it seems we have to move Soler if we were to offer Heyward a contract?

I'd prefer to keep him. I think he develops into a very good player and especially at his price. Maybe we have move him while he's cheap? I know a lot about football and he Bears but MLB is much more complicated to me!

Well, I'd appreciate some help inderstanding this. Thank you.

The reason you'd do a trade is you may not want Heyward in CF and while Soler is talented, the Cubs see that their rotation is not very young and that trading Soler+pieces for a young arm that is controllable and could replace Lester as the #2 in a few years as Lester declines is important. To me, the guys who fit this criteria are Carlos Carrasco (doesn't cost above 10 million through 2020), Danny Salazar (FA after 2020 season), Chris Archer (great contract through 2021) type arms and all those arms will cost at least Soler+other players.

I don't see the Cubs dumping Soler but I could see them potentially using him to get a high end SP.

The reasoning is you have to give to get. In this instance, if the Cubs are going to get a young, cost controlled starter, they are going to have to give up something.

That would either be Baez or Soler to me. Soler is said to be the preferred target in dealing with the Indians, and Baez might be a trade chip if they dealt him to the Padres or Rays.

If they were to sign Heyward, you obviously want your best defensive player playing their natural position which would be right field. Hey, I am all for keeping Soler, but the Cubs need a young starter too since they already have three starters now over the age of 30 in Hammel (32), Lester (31), and Lackey (37), and Arrieta is 29.

Ideally, you'd like to be in the Mets position with young pitching, but for the Cubs, they have position players like that and you would like to have a good balance in age in the rotation.

You wouldn't technically have to move Soler. Obviously the idea is Almora/Martinez in CF in 2-3 years and Heyward to RF. If Schwarber doesn't pick up C full time Soler has no place. On the other hand, you could in theory platoon him some what in LF with Schwarber if schwarber is able to catch at least part time. And with Soler's injury history maybe that's not such a bad thing.

However, I think most just feel at that point he's more a value as a trade piece than he is as that sort of player. It's how I feel about Baez as a super utility guy. You would think his value is high enough as a trade piece to net you an upgrade better than what he provides you in that roll.

Soler would have to be traded if Heyward follows thru with his demands not to play CF.

Thanks guys for enlightening me on the subject. I was honestly waiting for a barrage of hate posts! I'm used to the Bears forum!

I totally get it now and it makes perfect sense! I'm a on board with this idea and if it nets us a young arm like Salazar, Archer I'm all for it! In fact, I hope this happens! The impact of a young stud pitcher will have a much bigger impact than Soler will provide!

Here's what I'd like to receive from each team if we traded with one:

–From the Rays, I'd want Drew Smyly.

–Tyson Ross is the only pitcher I'd want from the Padres.

–From the Indians, I'd want Carlos Corrasco over Danny Salazar.

I doubt they trade him even if they get Heyward. Maddon loves to keep it flexible and having Baez is like having a starter that you move around.

So on those days you want to give a regular a day off you are not causing the team to stall.

I'm curious exactly what it would take to get Archer back from the Rays. He would be perfect right now. Wouldn't have to wait a couple years, he would probably be the #2 now.

Very team friendly contract, perhaps even more so than Chris Sale. Under control for 6 years for under $40 million.

I'd try quantity first

Baez
McKinney
Torres
Vogelbach
Underwood
Hendricks

and if that fell through, go Schwarber+Hendricks.

the quantity approach I could swallow losing. I don't think I could part with schwarber in a deal for him though as good as archer is. id rather give them soler AND baez before giving them scwarber...that's just me though

Where do you come up with this stuff?

“I’m perfectly fine with playing center field or right field.”

He got paid as I stated. Heyward was the one that said he did not want to play CF. Re-read what I wrote again as you clearly misunderstood what is typed.

I'm not doubting you heard that but I never did. I did hear him say he would prefer not to lead off which he doesn't have to do most of the time with Zobrist here.

He said he would enjoy to play CF at Wriggley. He was excited be the notion. But will play what role is needed.

Pretty sure he didn't want to lead off
