Following scenario:

Your team is up by 2 with under 24 seconds to go. The other team has the ball. You´re over the foul limit. (Sounds familiar, huh?)

Do you:

a) defend as hard as you can without fouling and hope they don´t score

or

b) foul immidiately?

I´m chosing option b! Even if the other team makes both freethrows (what seems to be very difficult in the NBA) and ties the game, you still have the last shot to win it with much time on the clock.

I mean you have the last shot anyway if the other team scores but you don´t take the risk to give up the lead!

I would rather believe in myself to win it in OT.

You still might lose the game in this OT but isn´t it better than counting on one shot to not go in?

The German national team lost a game against Turkey in the Olympics couple of years ago just like this and afterwords everyone said it was a mistake not to foul!

Discuss!

Id defend as hard as I can and if a foul is called, a foul is called.....no need to intentionally foul when the refs blow the whistle at hard legal defense anyway.
Might as well at least try to defend. The bad refs are going to blow the whistle anyway.
Plus for a great defensive team like ours to give up on defense with an intentional foul is unThibbs like...Not in our teams character.

nba is not europe. what strategy?

the right strategy in this situation imo is to defend the 3 and DON'T foul. if they make the 2pt then you have the last ball to win it or play OT

don't foul...unless you are a strong offensive team and a weak defensive team

Another great strategy would be to defend the shit out of everyone and let JR Smith get open.

Well it depends on the people on the court. If a guy like Melo has the ball, he's going to be the type to drain both free throws. You just have to guard him tight at the 3pt line and force him into the worst shot possible. A strong defensive team like the Bulls would probably go the route of relying on their defense every time. For the most part, that's a good strategy. Clutch NBA players will make shots whether they're ridiculous pull up 3s or free throws. Won't make a difference. Also depends on how much you trust your team to pull it out in OT. Call me crazy, but I actually don't trust the Bulls much in OT ever, even if they have success. Idk why...just a feeling I have whenever they go into OT.

Play good defense. Defense wins championships. That's why the New York Pricks won't win one with Melo, Smith, and Amare on the court at the same time won't win a championship.

Play good defense then crash the boards in the event of a miss. If a foul happens then ight. But I wouldn't go for an intentional foul if I'm leading at the end of games.

No you don't foul in that situation. This is not college ball where you have 1-and-1's & the players often have mental breakdowns due to the pressure situation. And a great defensive team like ours would never do that. You defend well & if a foul happens, it happens, just like everyone else has said.

You never foul when you're only up 2. Other team has a much lower % of making a 3pt shot than making 2 FT's.

If you're up 3 (with less than 12 seconds on the clock), then of course you foul and send em to the line for 2 FT's. In bound after they likely make both FTs, then hopefully you can sink at least 1 of the 2 FT's after they foul and that's ballgame likely.

Why I say 12 seconds:
1.) It'll roughly take 4 seconds to bring the ball up the court for losing team. That leaves 7-8 seconds on clock. Foul when they get right passed HC.

2.) Assuming they make both FT's you inbound with 7-8 seconds. They'll foul, which leaves you w/ about 6.6-7.6 seconds. If you only make just 1 of 2, you're up 2. That leaves them 6.6 seconds to bring ball all the way back up the court. Roughly 1.6-2.6 seconds when they hit HC. It takes about 2 seconds to shoot a basketball. (This is when you FC Press, it adds time to their already slim clock).

3.) When you FC Press the losing team, it will only add to their chaos. They'll either:
A.) Force a bad pass trying to break the press
B.) Throw up a prayer (odds of it going in are slim to none)

Also, when FC Pressing, your players should hopefully be smart enough to just have their arms straight up in the air. Leaves no chance for a stupid foul.
