In my opinion Leddy should've covered the guy WITHOUT the puck, and left the puck handler to Emery.

The goalie HAS to watch the guy with the puck either way. Why make it harder for him by leaving two options open?

Am I just a Texas football and baseball fan who watched hockey but never played it? I've always heard that defender takes the free skater.

Somebody help me...

A teachable moment?

Leddy had multiple bad moments in this one. Can't take a guy out who doesn't have the puck, though, so he's got to try to put himself in position to try to take that pass away. But ultimately, yeah, Leddy has to put himself in better position. St. Louis has made a career out of making nifty drop passes like that, and he made another one. That whole damn play to hell when a stick-less Bolland couldn't get the puck out of the damn zone and was eventually kept alive by a hustling MAB.

Are we talking 2 on 1s?

I was always taught take away the pass. I didn't start playing organized hockey til highschool, but it was always said that goalies can and should save the head on shots.

Easier said than done though. You get greedy and want to do both.

That's what it was. A two on one in the OT with Leddy trying to do the "skate backwards and deny the shot and then flop a the last minute" thing.

I fucking HATE that kind of D. Q-Stache must teach it because we all do it. Take away the effing pass and let the goalie do what he's paid to do!

The defense was terrible the whole game and Emery got blamed for it, but that's a different discussion. Leddy is still a young player and I'm just guessing that a hockey 2 on 1 is just like a basketball 2 and 1 in the fact that it takes a lot of skill to defend it. You have to defend the puck first, but also deny the pass. It's all about reading the guy with the puck.

The difference in basketball and hockey is the goalie. You aren't taught to defend the puck, but let the goalie have a clear view of the guy with the puck (of course it all tends to unravel if you do everything right- and the guy with the puck has a wicked shot ---and still buries it -but at least, you as a defenceman have played sound defence... and the goalie gets beat by the player... it happens [that one happened to me once -- which is not meant to be my take on this specific play - see below, I haven't looked at it yet.).

So, in essence, Bob you have it correct in the general sense (as does Buff) - however too, as Iago points out (and mind you I haven't looked at the highlights, but I know the reputation of Marty St Louis ... he is a big time scoring threat, and a vet. He was one of the key elements of Tampa Bay's Stanely Cup win some years back -so he has been doing this a long time- not only is he slick, now he is a vet. Experience is everything, and I'm sure that there's a guy with the puck who is always going to enjoy an advantage over Leddy at both players' respective points in their NHL careers.

Where is hawkwriter when you need him?

You only say that because you know I can give an answer that makes sense and is pretty damn accurate. Flat out. Thanks for the compliment.

Everyone else had it. Goalie takes the shot and Dman takes the pass.

Thank you gentlemen. I always thought that was the answer but we seem to play it the other way EVERY damned time. Drives me batshit.

^^^ I'm sorry, did I say something that was inaccurate? I don't think so.

Stop trying to start shit when there is nothing that needs to be said. Hell, you call me out in a thread that I haven't even posted in? You just continue to make yourself look like an immature ******. Keep bringing nothing to the table in terms of hockey, I'm sure everyone here respects your posts....
