CHICAGO -- The process to hire the Cubs' next manager is in full motion as team chairman of the board Tom Ricketts has begun his interviews with candidates that general manager Jim Hendry and assistant GM Randy Bush began setting up six weeks ago.

Former Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge was the latest to be interviewed, meeting with Ricketts on Monday, according to major league sources. Triple-A Iowa manager Ryne Sandberg and interim manager Mike Quade have already had their interviews with Ricketts within the last two weeks. Quade met with Ricketts before returning to his winter home in Florida after the Cubs season ended on Oct. 3.

Quade went 24-13 in his run as interim Cubs manager. That was the second-best record in the major leagues from Aug. 23 to the end of the season.

Sandberg, in his first year as Iowa manager, was the Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year, losing out on a chance to go to the playoffs when his team lost on the last day of the minor league season.

Wedge managed the Cleveland Indians from 2003-2009. He was the American League Manager of the Year in 2007.

At this point it's unknown if former Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin will meet with Ricketts. Melvin was said to still be a candidate for the Cubs job when the season ended.

Thoughts? I don't think it's a big deal and too big.

I don't want Sandberg to be the manager. His managing is too old-style and he uses the bunt way too often. But I get the feeling Ricketts will become enamored w/ the idea of having a popular former Cubs player who's in the HOF as a manager. Out of the likely choices, I see Quade getting the job.

That's another thing, a lot of people are saying Ryno should be hired because he was a HOF player but that doesn't have anything to do with being a manager. Just because you were a great player, doesn't mean you will be a great manager. Not to mention I think he will be next to impossible to fire.

I don't want Melvin to be the manager, but he'll be managing a team next season, and I see him either being the Brewers or Pirates manager.

Wedge has a very good chance for the Prates job, but also the Jays as well.

I don't want Bob Melvin at all. Wedge could be good. He had a couple really good Indian teams. I still think it's going to be Quade.

I'm open to Quade or Wedge at this point..

I would give Ryno a spot on the coaching staff if he doesn't take a position somewhere else..

^ Here's the article:

mariners have settled on eric wedge to be their next manager. story up soon on

Twitter

MLBTR write up on it:

The Mariners will hire Eric Wedge to be the team's next manager, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter). Wedge, the 2007 manager of the year with the Indians, beat out Bobby Valentine, John Gibbons, Lloyd McClendon, Cecil Cooper and others for the job. The Blue Jays and Pirates were among the teams who were reportedly considering Wedge for their managerial vacancies.

The highlight of Wedge's tenure in Cleveland came back in 2007, when the Tribe made it to the ALCS before losing to Boston. The 42-year-old led the Indians to a 561-573 record in seven seasons.

Back in April of 2004, the Indians traded Milton Bradley to the Dodgers when it became clear that he was no longer a fit in Cleveland. Wedge perceived a lack of hustle from Bradley, and that perception contributed to the trade. The two will be reunited in Seattle, but Wedge no doubt convinced Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik that his relationship with Bradley will be workable.
