The Chicago Bulls have invited guard John Lucas III to training camp with a partially guaranteed one-year contract, according to sources close to the situation.

After spending last season in China playing for the Yao Ming-owned Shanghai Sharks, Lucas starred for Chicago's summer-league team in July and was described at the time by new Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau as an "ideal" choice to serve as a third point guard behind Derrick Rose and C.J. Watson.

One source with knowledge of the Bulls' thinking told ESPN.com that the club has not abandoned hope of trading for Portland's Rudy Fernandez, who has been made available by the Trail Blazers. The Bulls and Blazers have discussed a deal that would send Fernandez to Chicago, but it's believed that Portland continues to hold out for more than a future first-round pick in return for the Spaniard.

fantastic move. john lucas showed potential during his stay in china and during the summer league. you could do much worse for a third PG. even if we get rudy i'd want him on the team. rudy's really more of a small SG than a PG, so it would be valuable to have lucas anyway.

it's really exciting that this team has enough depth that its 13th man has the potential to be a legitimate NBA player instead of joe alexander :)

if we dont get rudy which i think we wont, hoping im wrong though, i will be happy with Lucas on the team. he really played well in the SL. With that said, we all know the SL is totally different to the regular season.

JL3 has grown on me, and a few teams also think hes worth a shot. I know during SL, SVG was commenting on how he wanted him, and I think if we stole Redick from them, the Magic would have signed Lucas.

Great great move. I love Lucas and think he'd fit great as a backup PG.

He'll get as much playing time as Roberson did.

If no one gets injured then your prolly right. Either way he's good to have in the organization.

With Rose and Watson, this guy isn't going to see the floor unless we are up 20 or down 20.

Fantastic...as SL all star. xD But as the 13th man, who cares? He'll never play anyway, so sure, good move!
