The Chicago White Sox claimed left-handed pitcher Eric Surkamp off waivers from the San Francisco Giants, the team announced Monday.
The 26-year-old Surkamp was a Giants sixth-round selection in the 2008 draft and has gone 33-14 with a 2.84 ERA in 87 games, including 83 starts, in the minor leagues. He is 2-3 with a 7.36 ERA in seven career major league starts.
After missing the 2012 season due to ulnar collateral ligament replacement surgery on his left elbow, Surkamp pitched for the Giants' Class A and Triple-A teams in 2013. He went a combined 7-1 with a 2.80 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 16 starts.
Also on Monday, the Toronto Blue Jays claimed infielder Brent Morel off waivers from the Sox. The third baseman played in 194 games with the Sox over four seasons, hitting .229 with a .276 on-base percentage, 13 home runs, 23 doubles, 70 runs and 54 RBIs.
