Hey guys-
I am lucky enough to keep myself stocked with new winter gear every year.
I always donate my gently used coats, coveralls, boots and packs of gloves to a local food pantry or coat drive.
Each year I am stunned by how incredibly grateful the men are who get them, and they inevitably tell me how terrible it is to work outside in the cold with inadequate clothes.
I have been there in my life and each minute is torture. It is hard to concentrate on your work when frostbite is a very real threat.
The year I began doing this, I rounded up a big ass stack of 6 pairs of coveralls and 10 coats from myself and a co-worker along with a box of new thermal shirts and pants, 36 pairs of insulated buckskin gloves and 4 pairs of sturdy, warm work boots. My lady was the Principal for a school in a less than affluent area at the time, and they had a yearly clothing drive and she told me Mens clothes were at a premium... cause us guys wear clothes till they die- too wrecked to be donated.
I was staying to help hand out, and the men who came in with their families, swallowing their pride and knowing there would be nothing for them... their eyes lit up when they saw there was something there for them.
Every last guy who got a coat or coveralls or gloves came to one of the staff and thanked them... most must have had dust in their eyes because they were watering a bit.
I had to walk on out- I think I was getting something in my eyes as well.
So remember-While ladies change fashion and get rid of old coats by the dozen, and kids outgrow them like crazy, Men rarely have enough to go around, and what is there is usually beaten to death.
If you guys have coveralls or good solid work coats hiding in the closet, hand em out and get new ones. If you have good work boots that you can spare, hand em out. Maybe even buy a few packs of heavy socks if you are lucky enough to have that dough.
Happy whatever holiday you celebrate, and if you dont celebrate any, well, Cheers to you.
