Special assistant Hughes to leave Cubs - chicagotribune.com
By Paul Sullivan, Tribune reporter 4:51 p.m. CDT, September 20, 2011
Gary Hughes, top assistant to fired Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry, will not return in 2012, the team said Tuesday.
Hughes, who has been involved in professional baseball for 44 years, joined the Cubs in 2002 and was the team's top talent evaluator. He also has worked for the Marlins, Reds, Rockies, Giants, Yankees and Expos.
Hughes was with Montreal as scouting director when Mike Quade was managing in the Expos' farm system and helped him get ahead with the Cubs.
"Always helps to have someone around who appreciates the work you do," Quade said.
