They reload via the farm, and add players in FA when need be. Most of these guys are homegrown

very simple. they have the best development staff and scouting staff on the planet. they dont need 25 guys in the "top 50" specs rankings. they have an eye for talent. I wish my team had that type of development staff.

and where they are short they fill with a vet and it usually isnt a "super star". they are the role model for all of baseball. they do it right.

Team Rabbit's Foot, as my friend calls them.

Their fans whine that their "reward' for making the playoffs is having to face the Dodgers. But getting LA ina 5 game series proves to be beneficial.

Kershaw tires in the heat, and Mattingly is the only one of 53,000 in the park to not notice.

Game 3, Ryu gives up a solo HR in 6 IP, and Donny Clueless pinch hits for him in the top of the 7th with the bases empty and 2 out!

Predictably, the bullpen immediately allows the winning runs before Donny brings in his decent relievers.

Unreal. Donny will be looking for a job soon. (I think I already said that.)

This is so true.

They make contact.
They make the opposing pitcher throw a lot of pitches.
They take the extra base, even with slow runners, because they don't fall asleep on the basepaths (Starlin, are you listening?)
They properly instruct their players how to run the bases (Ricky, are you listening?)
They score from 2nd on a single, but prevent their opponent from doing so.

They play baseball as it is supposed to be played.

They really are the model of consistency. The Spurs of the NBA and the Patriots in the NFL are very similar. They have guidelines for scouting and player development that they refuse to stray from. They prefer to promote from within and fill roster needs with cost-effective players with experience and ones who compliment the roster as currently constructed well. They have a coaching staff that understands the core concepts that ownership demands of their entire staff.... even if they're a rival, you can't help but admire it.

Did the Cubs do exactly what the Blackhawks did?? Red Sox have pretty much been the Cardinals of the AL during the same time span. Wouldn't expect you to say anything positive about the Cubs future that was more so for others.

There will be a changing of the guard at some point. Not a rarity that a division is owned by a team for a period of time. Goes for any sport (look at the Packers). Or even the AL Central. Detroit has been the dominant team but I doubt that lasts any longer, with the Royals young core

Recent history shows that you have to fear the Cardinals when they aren't picked to win it. They didn't exactly blow the doors off of the division winning it in the second to the last game, they then beat the Cy Young award winner twice, and once in his own backyard with a 6-2 lead.

To top that off, now that the Giants have eliminated the Nationals, the Cardinals now own home field advantage in the NLCS.

Wouldn't it be fitting for the Cardinals to face the Royals, and get redemption from the 1985 matchup when the Cardinals were probably the 6th best team in the playoffs in both leagues out of the possible 10. :facepalm2:

Would love to see the Royals beat the Cardinals in the WS. That would be the best, just for the Royals fans that have been laughed at by Cardinals fans for 30 years

What? You don't think that would give the Royals fans bragging rights? LOL

Pretty sure losing the WS would have an effect on Cardinals fans

ummm. kane, toews, hossa, keith, seabrook, sharp all had proved themselves as true pros while elite. you cannot compare the cubs and the blackhawks. you do not have a core atleast as of yet like the hawks did

Ehhhhhh I don't know if I'd use this comparison. While the Red Wings DID build a lot of that team in their farm system, in the 90s they were able to buy anyone because there was no luxury tax as a result of a salary cap.

Everybody wanted to go there. Note how after the cap was in place after the 04-05 lockout that the Red Wings couldn't just buy every superstar that hit free agency. They were still good because of the core, but could no longer pluck small market teams that do get that 1 star.

Hawks are playing against the cap with a luxury tax with draft pick loss as well as fines and more implications, have been the entire time. I think what they did post 2005 is better than the Red Wings......

So yeah, while they did draft Yzerman, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, LaPointe, Tomas Holmstrom, and a lot of guys names currently or soon to be hanging in the Joe Louis Arena or whereever they plan to call home's rafters........

They also bought/"traded" a lot of players like Mike Vernon, Brendon Shannahan, Chris Chelios, Sergei Federov, Larry Murphy, Brett Hull, Luke Robataille, and Dominek Hasek. They had an open checkbook with no restrictions and a dynasty as well as history on their sides.

The cards are similar to that, but they don't spend. They win with smart, small ball. They don't need a 180 million dollar payroll. They can easily replace a HOF who leaves for big money like Pujols. Immediately after 2005's lockout, the Red Wings became handicapped because they could no longer bully teams for their players, spending wildly and freely.

They also stockpile pitching assets with live arms that can be brought up for relief help and/or spot starts. This is something that Boston has done well also and that the Cubs are very quietly emulating if you look closely.
