Bowman confident in his young centers - Chicago Blackhawks Blog - ESPN Chicago

Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman continued to defend his offseason decisions Wednesday, re-iterating his position the team is not thin at the center position.

"I don't look at it that way, that we are thinner," Bowman said at the opening of Blackhawks/Stanley's Kitchen & Tap restaurant at O'Hare Airport. "Ben Smith played really well in the playoffs. He played a lot of center in Rockford. And [Marcus] Kruger. Both those guys were probably two of our more effective forwards in the playoffs.

"They're young, but there is something to be said for that. Kruger was one of the top 2 centers for Sweden in the World Championships. I think he's ready for the next step."

Kruger continues to come up as a key component for the Hawks moving forward. He played 12 games combined between the regular season and the playoffs after a surprise decision to bring him over from Europe late in the year. He had one assist and showed good instincts but didn't have the puck enough.

"It's kind of like Nick Leddy," Bowman stated. "You can be as confident as you want, but you're playing in the best league in a pressure situation.

"He had no training camp with us. Kruger was dropped in here in a tough situation and he responded pretty well. He's been working out. He‘ll be stronger and have a full camp. He's got an edge to him too. He's feisty."

It's believed Joel Quenneville wanted Kruger to start last year with the Hawks and would have made him their third line center. Expect that to be his role when this season starts, which means Patrick Sharp doesn't have to start the year in the middle.

Though the Hawks say they're happy with what they have, it doesn't mean they didn't try to get better.

"We talked to a number of people," Bowman explained. "It's hard to find centers, and they get tons of money.

"We wouldn't have done some of the other things I thought we needed to do if we went out and spent $3.5 million on a center. I mean, I agree center is a very important position. It is the strength of our prospects right now. It's in the middle. We have [Kevin] Hayes, [Mak] McNeill, Phillip Danault. If we are talking a year or two from now we are going to be trying to be moving guys to the wing as opposed to looking for centers."

As for Ryan Johnson or John Madden or another center, there's simply no room right now, according to Bowman.

"We have 14 forwards right now who are in the mix for our team," he said. "We don't want to block out too many guys. That's why I signed all these guys to one-year contracts.

"Now we might re-sign most or all of them, or we might say these guys that we like are developing. On July 1 a lot of these free agents are looking for multi-year deals. If I signed a couple of centers to three-year deals then we would have to jettison some of these guys because we believe in our system here of developing players. We'll see how it plays out, but that's why we want to leave enough room in the budget."

Bowman made the decision to sign his crop of free agents instead of overspending on a center. Time will tell if that was the right call.

So Kruger would be our 3rd line center which would move Bolland up to 2nd line duties? I dont really like that...

It's Q, if it fails, it'll last 2 games and be re-shifted anyway.

If they are gonna keep Kruger up I'd prefer to slot him between Hossa and Brunette

That would be an interesting line...then sharp would move up to line 1 with 19 and 88?

If Sharpie get to play the wing then the only difference between our 2nd and 3rd line is Hossa.

I guess, but for some reason im just not 100% comfortable with Bolland on 2nd line

I've got a stat comparison for you:

58 games, 62 goals, 83 assists, 145 points.
59 games, 57 goals, 73 assists, 130 points.

The first line is Patrick Kane's 06-07 stat line from the London Knights.
The second is the 05-06 stat line for Dave Bolland on the same squad.

Now, is Bolland equal to Kane right now? Dear God no. But those stats show that Dave Bolland does have the ability to produce offensively.

Flash back to the 1st round series against Vancouver. Yeah, Bolland shut down the Sedin sisters, but he also was a big offensive producer.

I'd like to see Bolland get one more shot as the 2nd line center for the team. See if he can do it. I thought Bolland was making big offensive strides last year until he got hurt in March.

If he fails, he'll be one of the top #3 centers in the league.

The London Knights aren't NHL material, but I get what your saying...:)

IF he gets to the 2nd line, he will be surrounded by 2 EXCELLENT wingers, so he SHOULD be putting up numbers...

If not, he will drop back down...
But seeing how well he has played 3rd line in the past, do you risk missing out on points by gambling Bolland spot? We saw just how important points were last year...

Looks like we dont have a choice however since it look s like Bowman is done...
Maybe he still has hope for Richards? That could be why hes so pissed about these other signings.

That ship has sailed

Speaking of random stat comparisons, With all the talk Sharp is naturally better as a winger. Its more clear the basic stats show that his production is higher, but is it as much the center position making him have more defensive responsibility holding him back or is the offensive production spiked much more due to him mostly just playing wing alongisde Toews and Kane?

Maybe more full time with the 2nd line could benefit Bolland. The 2nd line combo in brief stints of Brou-Bolland-Kane had some success on the ice, although at times it was the Patrick Kane control the puck himself in the offensive zone show.

Sharp's faceoff numbers aren't very good and his +/- rating plummeted last season despite fantastic goal production, which would lead you to believe that he isn't responsible enough on the defensive end to be a center. I don't think his offensive numbers go down when he's at center, but the team's overall defense does.

I agree...its kinda of a catch 22 IMO

With sharp at Center, good offense, drop on Defense...

With Bolland at center, good defense, drop on offense (from what Sharp can do)

I'm not an "I told you so" guy, but "I told you so".

I honestly think Kruger has the speed and the puck savvy to play in the league. In the day that your third line was your checking line I'd have seen Kruger as our four line center.

I like it because it allows us to move Sharp back to a wing and since we aren't gonna go out and sign a 2 line center like we SHOULD HAVE, we might as well at least talk up the guys we do have...

I'd be more comfortable with Bolland on the 2nd line as opposed to Kruger, but Kruger is much more of an unknown commodity right now. Maybe he'll take off, maybe he won't.

Either way, if anyone within the Hawks organization right now steps into that 2nd line role and flourish, you'd be looking at the favorites to win the Western Conference, if not the whole thing.

This is all good.

Either Sharp or Bolland will be the 2 center and the team has a healthy amount of cap room to make something happen should neither of those options really pan out.

Solid.
