Starlin Castro, rookie shortstop for the Cubs, should have enough at-bats by next week to qualify for the batting title, and he would have ranked third in the National League with a .320 average entering Friday's game.

"Isn't that wonderful," manager Lou Piniella said. "This kid here, he's a player. He's gotten better and better as the season has progressed. He makes his rookie mistakes, but we live with them and work with him. He's really coming along. He's taken to that two-hole."

Castro needed 17 more at-bats through Thursday to qualify. The NL leader was the Rockies' Carlos Gonzalez at .322.

This just shows how good this kid can be. I'm really pulling for him to win this batting title, and as a rookie that would be even more impressive. Do you guys think Castro has a chance?

Thoughts?

He has a chance no doubt, he's currently batting .314 now.

He also is going to have the day off today.

I know, that's what I'm waiting for, lol. He'd be an MVP candidate year in and year out if he had some more power.

I think power will come with age because he has showed some pop at the age of 20.

Not really.

Not really what? Batting .320 every year with say 15 homers and stellar defense at a hard position isn't good enough?

That's just a projection though

He's got a chance. He's batting close to .400 since after the break. If he keeps that up, he'll definitely be in it.

I hope the day off today will get him back into stride after a 0-5 day yesterday.

He's already made 1 MLB record this year, 1 Game record, now a 1 Season record.

Most RBI in MLB Debut
Youngest Batting Champion

But probably still won't get ROY

Yeah probably because of the hr. But, if he wins the batting champion, you kind of have to give it to him. If he comes in 2nd for the batting champion, he won't win ROY.

No, Posey has a higher average and more HR's, but I don't know if he'll even get enough PA's to qualify.
