Wages are less in Florida for the same positions offered in Illinois and many other states.

The by-product of "Right to Work" policies.

Isn't IL a right to work state as well?

It's been heading that direction, as unions across the state continue to lose power.

Right to work states prohibit compelling employees to join unions.

Texas paid @ 30% higher wages for my profession when I moved here 15 years ago, compared to Illinois (Chicago Metro Area). I tried to move back, just couldn't see it work finacially for me.

Don't they get it back through other ways, though? Like property taxes? I have no idea, I'm just guessing here.

Also, anyone notice that the states with the murkiest financial futures are pretty much liberal leaning blue states?

Our property taxes are pretty middle of the road compared to the rest of the country. A lot lower than IL:

We have a sales tax of 6%, but some areas are a little higher. I think most of the revenue comes from tourism (hotel taxes etc), but I'm not 100% sure.
