I went to see them last night..

What a fabulous fucking band!

One of the best live performances I have ever seen..Their dynamics were just unbelievably spot on. Their recordings dont do them justice as they are better live, and thats rare

as follows

Drums
Guitars 2 ( and they didnt step all over each other)
Bass
Keys
Piano
Bari Sax
Tenor Sax
Trumpet
Trombone
3 Female Singers

Of course, we had to deal with the usual morons, drunks, and stoners who wouldnt care who was playing as long as they could party and talk over the band while annoying other people

But the music was great..I always liked Steely Dan. But after last night, I have a new appreciation for those guys.

If you get a chance..Go see them..

BTW...Ole69..Thanks for sending the 4 drunk lesbians to sit behind us!

They have that reputation and considering the complexity of their arrangements they have to be very tight.

I was singing along to "My Old School" at the top of my lungs in the car on the way to work this morning, with the stero turned up to 11. Yes, I am a total dork, but I love me some Steely Dan.

The guitar solo on Kid Charlemagne is considered one of the best of all time. Thier guitarist Larry Carlton, literally worked on it for 2 weeks. Of course, Don Felder of the Eagles created the Hotel California solo in one morning and Clapton did While my guitar gently weeps in 2 hours. If you go to youtube you will find about 30 people trying to recreate it on their own

Not surprising.

"At the time Becker and F(a)gen were hard task-masters in the studio, and would hire dozens of session musicians to record the same guitar solo or drum fill until they felt they had something approaching what they had imagined. They were obsessive perfectionists who spent millions of dollars relentlessly torturing the dozens of Grade-A guitarists who apparently weren't "yacht-smooth" enough. Musicians would spend hours, sometimes days, in one of the many Los Angeles studios that Steely Dan used to record Aja, only to find that their work had been jettisoned in favour of someone else's."

"We just kept adjusting our standards higher and higher," says Becker, "so many days we'd make guys do 30 or 40 takes and never listen to any of them again, because we knew none of them were any good; but we just kept hoping that somehow it was just going to miraculously* get good."

Edit: Well... I tried to link to the article, but this site's (stupid) auto filter keeps breaking the link because of Donald F@gen's last name.

I never saw Steely Dan, but like them and will keep an eye out to go see them. Looking forward to going to the Outlaws concert next week, can't beat them in concert.

The only thing that bothers me at all, I do agree about having to deal with assholes at concert. But for me, if people can talk or sing over the band, the music is not nearly loud enough.

Here is my take on Steely Dan:

-Their music is for the sophisticated listener and the lyrics are often complex and well written. Most of the their stuff is not "sing along" anthems so I think it's often suited for background music. There music is highly produced and maybe overproduced. That makes it difficult to reproduce on stage. I cant remember the 1974 performance but I have seen them on live performance that were recorded and sometime you wont hear all that is going on in their records. For me they were great background music in the 70s but not something I could not get really excited about

I couldnt get seats in the 1st section as they were sold out before I got thru..I was in the 2nd of 3 sections...The music was just about right if people werent screaming over it...I spoke with a guy in the 1st section who said it was really loud and his ears were ringing after the concert

Yes, screaming is out of control.

I think "overproduced" is very relative, especially regarding what has been essentially a studio band. If they are putting on great live shows more power to them, but I'm content to listen to their recorded music.

Steely Dan is one of my favorites. I;ve never seen them live, but the jazz background should make them even better live than in studio.
