I didn't plan to pick a fight with Steve Jobs last night. It just sort of happened: An iPad advertisement ticked me off; I sent the Apple CEO an angry email; he told me about "freedom from porn."

The electronic debate proceeded from there.

Of course, there was a bit more to it than that. There's the context: Jobs' legal fight with my employer Gawker Media, over the handling of an iPhone prototype; my long-simmering worries about Apple's growing power to limit self expression through its lockdown on iPad apps; and the fact that my wife, who might normally (and quite sensibly) veto the idea of spending Friday night sending email flames, was out of town.

So in retrospect I was primed to lash out. But there was some serendipity too: Watching a new episode of 30 Rock on my digital video recorder, I somehow failed to skip over an Apple ad I'd never seen before, one that billed the iPad as nothing less than "a revolution." You can see an excerpt of the ad at the bottom of this post.

With a Stinger cocktail at my side, I dashed off a short, pointed question to Jobs' well-known email address.

A few hours later—after midnight here in California—he got back to me. And I got back to him. And so on.

I didn't identify myself as a writer for Gawker in my initial email, sent from my ryantate.com email address. But, as you'll see in the exchange below, I eventually made my affiliation clear, and Jobs didn't seem bothered. Between that and the fact that Jobs regularly uses emails to disclose new information to the public, knowing full well recipients now regularly make the exchanges public, I feel fine reproducing the thread below.

It's a feisty discussion, as you'll see. And heated, especially on my part.

Rare is the CEO who will spar one-on-one with customers and bloggers like this. Jobs deserves big credit for breaking the mold of the typical American executive, and not just because his company makes such hugely superior products: Jobs not only built and then rebuilt his company around some very strong opinions about digital life, but he's willing to defend them in public. Vigorously. Bluntly. At two in the morning on a weekend.

As much as Jobs and his actions anger me, and as harsh as I was to him, I came away from the exchange impressed with his willingness to engage.

Some notes on the actual content follow after the emails. Click any message to enlarge:

i do respect that steve jobs has the time to dick around on the internet arguing with someone till 230 in the morning. i like that hell get in active exchanges with thoughts with people that email him with constructive questions. i do, however, think hes being ridiciculous with the idea that apple is somehow an open company, and supports open software, but has complete control over the types of applications and software that it allows on their devices. also, apparently, no one has told steve that the browser on the ipad can go to porn sites, just not play flash video. Also, because the ipad cant play flash, many porn sites are either releasing videos in iphone/ipad/ipod touch format or in html5, which the ipad supports.

"Ryan Tate" was bitching to Steve Jobs about Apple being restrictive and inhibiting progress with their closed "i-Stuff" platforms....which is nothing really new with Apple.

Basically the dude was trying to goad Steve into getting pissed off about something that has been pretty known about Apple for decades. I just thought the exchange was funny, and gave a little bit of a perspective on Apple, Steve, angry people, and some of the industry fights going on. Fights that are all about who is going to control e-books.

Which is all that Apple really wants...the industry to move toward HTML5. It will be inevitable since Microsoft and Mozilla is inching closer to being on board and fully supporting HTML5.

This is all about who is going to "control" e-books and general interweb streaming content. Apple is in their best position to force a change in their favor. Something about being worth $245 billion and dominating certain sectors of the industry.

If anyone remembers the Netscape vs IE industry fight, I think this fight will go to that epic scale.

I played with the iPad a couple of weeks ago. The wireless version. I though it was pretty worthless. I would never pay money for it, and if someone gave one to me I doubt it would replace anything I currently use. It didn't support .pdf's. had to download an ap through iTunes to get it done.

I like Jobs last comment but at the same time I hate it.

"By the way, what have you done that is so great? Do you create anything, or just critizise others work and belittle thier motivations"?

Nicely played Steve Jobs but at the same time you sound like a pretentious ass too.

Nerd fights are funny. I wonder if the world would still function if Microsoft or Macintosh never exsisted. My gutt feeling and even more so my memories of living in a world where they didn't exsist makes me believe the world would be just fine.

Neither company nor their products have saved civilization, nor have they made us any better as people when it all boils down to things. So when nerds fight about things like this and the terms "saving the world" etc etc come up I just have to laugh.

Ohhh but don't get me wrong. I appreciate what both companies have done. Never been able to watch this money hockey games in my life!!
