Be a tourist and view the city from high up (Empire State Building)

See the Statue of Liberty

Visit Ground Zero.

Other than that, I got nothing...I havent been there since I was 13.

I live in the area but stay my ass in the suburbs. Had enough of the city earlier in life. There's those famous attractions Scoot pointed out plus Broadway shows if you're into that. Wouldn't do my Christmas shopping there, it's pretty pricey.

my recollection (from the one time I visited) is that NYC drivers are maniacs, especially the cab drivers, and parking spots are impossible to find. I'd recommend not driving into the city yourself if you can help it, but take public transit (if you have a native guide) or take a cab and assume the driver isn't going to get you killed- which might be hard to do while you are in the cab and he is cutting people off across 3 lanes of traffic in order to make a turn.

That's pretty true of most large cities...Chicago included.

If you wanted to see the Statue of Liberty up close from NY, it would take a lot of planning. It's a good distance off the harbor, and would likely eat away most of the day. Unless you're starting from Jersey.

Times Square is the closest "big" attraction to MSG, lots to look at, but prices up the wazoo(no shit, right?).

The nice part about NYC, is that you can go there without a rhyme or reason, and not worry about staying busy. The "upper east-side" (at least that's what the area of manhattan is called, IIRC) is a little more dull compared to the rest of the area. So plan your day moving INTO the upper east-side, don't start there(unless you really want to see Times Square bad), and you'll be okay.

And BTW, NY sucks. But enjoy it anyways.
