95% of the time I hate them. Unless I have 1 or 2 items and there's tons of lines elsewhere, which isn't often.

The self-serve lines near me are always full it seems.

I like to use them.

I always saw those things as a way to get rid of cashiers. With RFID technology, that will happen, though still a few years off of being easily integrated with grocery stores and such.

Seemingly, whenever I walked into a Home Depot, they had one cashier jockeying the register, and one cashier overseeing the self checkout lanes.

The biggest problems with the self-checkout lanes are idiots who can't use them correctly. Second biggest problem, is there is always at least one broke down.

My problem with the self check out at Jewel is I never have the Jewel card to get the discount. So I have to use the regular check out so I can use the cashier's card to get my discount.

The person manning the lines will scan one for you if you ask.

A-Fucking-Men. I personally prefer them because I prefer to limit my human interaction and am one of those go in, get your shit, pay for it, and leave. If I wanted to be social I would go on facebook. Usually the check-out drones here go slow, and try to engage you in conversation. As such, when I can I use the self-checkout but it's freaking amazing how many simps out there can't figure the bloody things out. I personall consider them an unwashed-masses IQ test. It it takes more than 20 seconds per item for you to check out--plus the time that the computer is doing the thinking for running your card, you're doing it wrong and you should be forced to use the normal checkout lines.

Agreed, I almost always use them. I literally just shop for a few days, so I hit the grocery store twice a week, and fill up a hand basket thats about it. Self checkout is much faster, unless you are in line behind a technologically challenged buffoon, or people that pay with cash. (I hate people that pay cash almost just as much) with their wrinkled ass bills the machine wont accept. Friggin annoying.

I cant shop for a month or a couple weeks like alot of people do, The last time I did that, produce and shit like that goes bad, so I only shop for a few days worth of food.

Good!!!

We have to stop using these sort of stupid technological advancements. For no reason other than it may be taking jobs away from people if they start getting too popular.

People are too freaking impatient or want everything done quicker. Sometimes quicker isn't always the best road to travel. Everything needs to be done by machine now in everyones mind. The problem with that is 1) It may create job loss as stated previously and 2) Machines sometimes have the ability to dumb down the population. If one is always relying on machines to do the work it means parts of our brains aren't being used regularly as much as they could be. We humans need the challenge of problem solving. It helps to keep us healthy and functioning bodies. Relying on machines to do all our problem solvings and calculations is dangerous in my opinion. could be a part of de-evolution. 3) Another means of taking away human to human contact. Even though much new technology has been able to improve it (ie video to video via computers and phones) they still don't replace actual physical contact in which other senses are being used such as the sense of smell which is an important sense in communicating. That's all being lost.

I am not anti-technology in any way. I do think we need to stop and take a look at those technologies that enhance our lives and help us move forward and those which actually do the opposite. That's just me. Maybe because I didn't grow up with all these crazy things around me and remember being able to function just as good back then if not better in many cases. I sound like an old man..UGH!!! I honestly don't think my skills, brain and body get challenged or groomed as much as they used to. In many cases I feel like I am losing my humanism. Strange.

The biggest problem at our local grocery is when a member of the non-English speaking community tries to use one in English. That's good for a 10 minute wait everytime

Usually when I've needed help the person manning the line is either nowhere to be found, they get bored waiting there and wander off to find another teller to chit-chat with.

Jako mentioned Home Depot earlier, the one near me has attentive people near both the regular and self checkout lines. The Lowes in Vernon Hills, good grief, you used to have to do everything yourself with the automated lines and then wait for someone to come by to ask you the last four digits of your credit card number to complete the checkout (why, I don't know, it's the same damn four numbers for anyone using a Visa card), except the person would usually be wandering aroung bored with their head up their ass not doing anything anyway. Now Lowes lets you enter the same damn four last numbers yourself. Talk about crappy job engagement, Lowes should just chain a Golden Retriever to their automated lines to pet and wag it's tail for the customers.
