I have the Ipad air and love it. But i also have iphone and apple tv before, so buying an Apple tablet was a no brainer. I did not do a lot of homework or testing any non-Apple tablets because of that.

I will say that unless I am on-call for work, I dont even use my PCs anymore. There are some other little annoyances here and there but that is app related between companies (like I cant buy anything through the Amazon Prime video app, but I can sync and watch them on Ipad).

The battery life is solid, love the size, love the compatibility to the other toys (all Apple so again, not a big surprise).

I work in the cell phone/tablet industry and would vouch for the iPad Air. You're going to pay a bit more because it's Apple, but, the quality is going to be superior to any Samsung tablet on the market.

I am not an Apple fan boy at all but they are the best when it comes to tablets.

All depends on what he is going to be doing with it. But the iPad Air is a solid device, and can pretty much do anything needed with it, and ease.

The iOS still has THE best security of all the tablets (as long as it is not jailbroken).

Does anybody recommend an android based or windows based product?

They certainly tend to be cheaper.

I'm buying it for school work, download his textbooks from the bookstore ect.... I'm sure he'll use it for entertainment, video, web surfing, music, games as well.

Also is the Ipad Air basically the same as the Ipad 3 just less bulky/mass/heavy?

I am an Android user on basically anything except a tablet.

Android is great but if you're getting a tablet and have the extra coin, go for the iPad Air.

While the Windows tablets are enticing, they are crazy slow and a major pain to use the keyboards with.

Androids are ok, but not as polished as the iPad at this moment in time.

I asked around the floor of geeks a bit as well and most say the same thing for tablets (at least at this point)...

Go Apple or Go Home. This also came from some that are on the non-Apple side of the religious debate.

Ipad Air, IPad Mini.

There were a couple thumbs up for the Amazon Kindle one (and as an old kindle user, this doesnt surprise me). What you save in cash for Kindle you lose in some robust...um...ness

I had a kindle fire for a while. It was really simple and was pretty nice. I am not a tech person at all, and it was easy to navigate stuff. The e-reader part was beautiful. The apps that were downloaded, while not many, worked fine. Interneting was a ok for me. I dunno what a kid needs but I would save the money on an ipad if he doesnt need nuthin fancy.

Not as worried about cost. It's coming out of college savings and will be tax deductible.

I've been looking at options recently and have pretty much decided I'd go with a hybrid touchscreen laptop instead of a tablet. It's a full PC with the tablet convenience and you're not stuck with 32gb of hard drive space. I've had my eye on the Lenovo Yoga 2. I have an iPad but I would not go with another one. I hate what they did with iOS7, I hate that I'm limited to 32gb and can't upgrade, and I can't really use it for creation. It's almost entirely for media consumption.

Screw the kindle. They lock you down to having to use their app store which severely limits what type of media files you can play. I have almost all my moves as .m4v and would not be able to play them on a kindle without unlocking it. If you want to go the money saving route there's the Google Nexus line and then you have full access to the Google Play market.

I'm also still pissed at Amazon for not releasing an android version of their Amazon Instant Video player.

Really, if one is looking to go with a portable Windows device the convertible laptops really are the best way. The Yoga is not a bad convertible laptop. Dell has one as well that is not too bad, but there are some frustrating things about basic usability with it. You may want to peek at the Fujitsu option as well as the touch and pen touch display is outstanding (they use Wacom)

That's interesting. I was unaware of the Fujitsu hybrids, but doing a quick look they seem to be priced quite a bit higher.

Yea, I was not aware that they were doing it either until we did out laptop reviews in late March. The higher price is from the image and touch display quality.
