Pretty much. IDK. I grew up in a machine shop and around working on all kinds of cars. Therefore I never went to a mechanic in my life. I just do it all myself. If there is any humor in that article, I wouldn't get it.

The worst is, you bought a car designed for a small i4, and the maker decided to squeeze a v6 in there, now the 30 minute, $40-$100 maintenance jobs become a 6 hour task, and hope to god that you still have that special tool that you never use.
But even 6 hours of work in your garage with your own TLC is better than dropping it off at a dealership that over-torques everything with air-wrenches and charges you $400 just for labor.

I have zero mechanical ability whatsoever. I know which fluids and fuses go where, but that's about it.

And that can be a good thing, it shows that the cars and the market became so good at it's job, that people no longer needed to be that invested into their cars. But it's also not that hard to work on most cars, if you ever wanted to learn. Some mechanics have god-syndrome because they don't think other people know or understand these things... that might be my biggest gripe.

No one in my family (either side) is good with their hands. The only one who uses his hands for a living is my cousin who's a dentist.

Nice. That's a handy hookup to have in itself.

I can change the oil, oil filters, fuel filters and spark plugs e.t.c. on my own, but that's about the extent of my mechanized horse know-how.

Most of the repairs I know how to do are the ones I've been through with my car. Mostly simpler things like brake pads, rotors, calipers, spark plugs and wires, distrubutor cap, alternator (I don't think I've owned a car yet that hasn't need this damn thing changed at least once), serpentine belt, headlights, taillights.

I replaced a radiator once with some help but I'm not sure I could do it again by myself. Replaced a heater coil too. That sucked.

There are plenty of things that I've had to take in to get repaired just because I didn't have the time or the know-how to DIY. Water-pump, clutch sticking (on an automatic), brake lines, muffler/exhast, blower moter...

I just went through #1 about a year ago. It was burning oil pretty badly because I kept having to add a quart every week or so so it was bound to go eventually. The worst part was that it happened here in Chicago and I live in Rockford. Cost us about $2000 for a new engine.

I've had #3 happen a few times but it was just a matter of adding more water to it. Never did any serious damage.

#4 happened with my 1994 Chevy Lumina. What really sucks was not long after we fixed it (about a year or so) I hit a deer and totaled it.

#5 happened with the first car I owned. Blown head gasket. Of course it was the middle of winter too. I had in my parents garage and we had to take the engine apart and put it back together again.

#8 happened with the same car as #5. I just got a different car at that point.
