A little bit review of the Bulls in the past year.
-Steve Schanwald takes fire at Norm Van Lier over comments about the fans in the old Chicago Stadium being better than those in the United Center.
-The Bulls drag their feet and fail to make a contract offer to Mike D'Antoni, as he signs with the New York Knicks. After the fact, Reinsdorf takes a cheap shot at D'Antoni, saying that D'Antoni was probably scared away because he was asked to play defense, and also that D'Antoni wasn't worth what he got.
(Ignoring the fact that D'Antoni was probably scared away because you kept drilling him about how you might not bring back the best player on the team, Ben Gordon....and oh yeah, you didn't offer him a contract.)
-At Mark Lewinthal's sister's graduation, the eager Mark tells Jerry how much of a fan he is, and how he hopes they can work something out with Ben Gordon and Luol Deng. Jerry acts like a shrew to Mark, and says, "Lu yes, Ben no."
-A rumor breaks out of the Greek media that CSKA Moscow has offered Ben Gordon $5.5 million to play for them. A few days later, Raymond Brothers, Gordon's agent, is slammed for planting a story and making up contract offers for Gordon in Europe to gain leverage.
(Ignoring the fact that $5.5 million is less than the NBA MLE, less than Gordon's qualifying offer, and less than what the Bulls were rumored to be offering. What leverage does Brothers get for planting that story? A more likely person to plant that story is .... FILL IN THE BLANK.)
-Jerry Reinsdorf signs off on the move of Neil Funk from the radio to television. Funk goes on to seemingly be a mouthpiece for Reindsorf on the air all season long. Funk continually ripped Gordon all season, even when he played good, with famous lines such as, "Only players concerned about their personal stats look down at the three point line before they shoot." (Because a two pointer with your foot on the line is better than a three!).
-Ben Gordon agrees to a $54 million over 6 year deal with the Chicago Bulls. Upon agreeing to the deal, Reinsdorf informs Gordon's agent that the contract is no longer on the table.
(If Gordon took the Bulls contract offer at the beginning of September [or whenever, super late date they ended up offering it], would the outcome be any different?)
-Jerry Reinsdorf tells Ben Gordon to be professional at the beginning of the season.
-Norm Van Lier leaves the Comcast Studios at halftime of the February Bulls vs. Pistons game, and watches the Johnny Red Kerr ceremony with the fans. Van Lier says on the Bulls postgame show that he was hurt that he wasn't invited. A few weeks later, both Johnny Red Kerr and Norm Van Lier die. Following their deaths, a relative of Kerr, says that Johnny loved Norm, and that Norm was definitely on Johnny's list.
-Leading up to free agency, general manager Gar Forman stated that it was the teams' top priority to bring back Ben Gordon. When free agency begins, Ben Gordon leaves for the Detroit Pistons, as the Bulls do not even make Gordon a contract offer.
(Was Forman knowingly lying about re-signing Gordon being a top priority, or was he just talking about a re-signing that ownership said he could make, but when the situation arose, was not allowed to do?)
