The Chicagoland dance for a new Bears stadium could be heading for the legal mosh pit.
According to Crain’s Chicago Business, via Sports Business Journal, Bears president and CEO Kevin Warren recently sent a letter to new Chicago Park District Superintendent Carlos Ramirez-Rosa regarding the condition of Soldier Field. The letter asks for documents that will “provide an overview of maintenance and capital spending.”
Warren, a lawyer, could be papering the record in an effort to eventually argue that the team’s lease has been breached. That could allow the Bears to leave Soldier Field before the arrangement expires in 2033.
If that’s the strategy, it points to the team prioritizing Arlington Heights over a lakefront stadium. If the Bears will be building a new stadium in Chicago, transferring the existing lease to a new stadium would be a no-brainer.
The Bears have been unable to get their plan for a lakefront stadium off the ground. They own the property in Arlington Heights at which a stadium would be constructed. In either location, the Bears will need to figure out how to finagle public funding. If not, they’ll have to decide whether to pay for it themselves.
That becomes more feasible if they can lure a second team to Chicago, doubling the number of annual home games.

Bears need a state of the art domed stadium with plenty of parking and many access routes to reduce traffic. AH provides that. Where on the lakefront can provide access routes and parking?. Plus chicago being Chicago. No more congestion.

Bears can lease out property for Hotels, businesses, and restaurants to subsidize paying for the stadium. I’m from the south suburbs and I think Arlington Heights make the best option.

While I think a lakefront stadium would be absolutely *gorgeous*, I also believe that whole promenade through the fantasy-land of getting the city and state to provide any money at all to build on the lake was a desperate negotiation tactic. Warren was dealt a crappy hand and was using any leverage he could to get some concessions from AH.

Having said that, I've never set foot on the actual field of Soldier Field and haven't been to a game there since 2015; is the field as bad as it used to be? I was under the perhaps misinformed impression that it had improved. If it's even a little bit bad (like after soccer games or concerts or winters), I would think their most convincing evidence might be affidavits from visiting teams.

It's always been AH since property purchase. Makes all the sense for all the reasons. This is just another part of the process. There's usually ways to break leases. Most are more of a promissory note than an actual two-party contract, and I wouldn't put it past Chicago to not have done it lockdown tight from day 1, although they seem to have had the Bears org's nuts in the vice for quite some time. Should be interesting. Cue the Michael Jackson eating popcorn gifs.

AH is the best choice for Bears org to increase its income and value. Everything is posturing right now to get the best deal possible.
