The 1970s guitar virtuoso deserves his own thread and not lumped in with all the Led heads

Here is a guy recreating Mick solo work on Midnight Rambler in 1969. Barely 20 he was the impetus for making the Stones the top top touring band by 1971

I prefer Jeff Beck. This all seems very basic, but that's okay. Just not spectacular by any means. Glad you enjoy it so much though.

Wish I could be playing a guitar like that. As really what a master!

Mick Taylor was just a kid but he took the Stones from a mediocre live band to the greatest live band of all time. His solos are legendary

One example is from 1972 perfromance of Love in Vain. First solo at 2;50 but the second one at 5:10 is even better. Look at Jaeger's face as he cant believe what he heard

Another is 1971 on Dead Flowers and his guitar just rolls through the song

Here he is at 3:30 on Time waits for no one

And the genius behind Can't You hear me Knocking at 4:40

I like Beck. This is a great album. Middleton is a great pianist

The story behind Mick Taylor is a sad one

He got his start in the John Mayall blues band when Clapton didnt show up for a show. Mayall asks the audience if there is anyone that can play lead guitar and 16 year old Taylor jumps up grabs Clapton's Gibson and jumps in. 4 years later, Brian Jones dies and the stones are going on tour. They test a few guitarists including the great Ry Cooder, but pick Taylor.

Taylor then transforms the bands live sound while Keith slips in and out of drug hazes. Keith Richards is jealous of the kid and he doesnt get writing credit for songs and is not made a full member. Taylor is a guitar genius and getting bored with the Stones. Also, the consensus in the industry is that the Stones are kaput. Taylor abruptly leaves the band to join up with Ginger Baker in a supposed supergroup. That falls apart and Taylor becomes a herion addict for the next 35 years. He serves as Bob Dylan's studio guitarist for a couple of years, but he's never the same. In return there are a number of "Mick Taylor songs" the Stones never play live because Ron Woods or Keith Richards cant do the solos justice as Taylor would. Time waits for no one is an example

There are probably 10,000 stones videos on you tube and everyone of them has many Taylor references to his greatness whether the vidoe was 5 years before Taylor of 35 years after. He has attained guitar god status but only played with the band for 5 years

Hendrix was a big fan of Mick Taylor and would always come to the Stones concerts to jam with Taylor before the show

For all the Jeff Beck lovers here is a strange marriage of talent: Van Morrison, Tom Jones and Jeff Beck solo at 1;15 on the Big Bill Bronzy classic. Notice how Morrison steps all over Tom Jones

Here is the virtuoso on his famous solo at 2:37. Written and performed by Taylor (lead) and Jagger (rhythm) with no input from Keith

One of the reasons Taylor left the band was getting no credit or payment for this song or many others

On "Can't you hear me knocking" the song was supposed to end at 4:48 and the other musicians started to put their instruments down, but the guitar genius just kept going. The result was one of the greatest solos of all time

Why the genius, Mick Taylor, quit the Rolling Stones
